The other day I was going through the comment section on the Cannabis.net Facebook page where I ran into one comment which asked whether it is possible to make “Cannabis Snuff” or “dip”.

For those of you who aren’t aware of what any of these things are, don’t worry. Snuff – in essence, is finely ground up tobacco which is inhaled and absorbed through the mucus membrane. In other words, it’s tobacco you can snort (like cocaine).

“Dip” on the other hand, is “chewing tobacco”, which is a “cookie-like” paste that can be put into your mouth and chewed. For reference, just think of any “old western” movie, and where you see a “cowboy” spit in his spittoon, that is chewing tobacco!

Now, while I personally don’t think that “snuff” would be a very pleasurable sensation, I did think that it might be interesting to at least find out if it is possible. After conducting some serious research, this is what I found.

Snuff – Yes but no

Firstly, I wanted to see if I could figure out if cannabis snuff already existed. After doing some initial research, I found absolutely nothing. Then, I decided to find out how to make snuff from tobacco. I thought that if I were to understand the process of making snuff, I would be able to translate that to cannabis and while there might not be an official product – understanding the dynamics of snuff would allow you to make “cannabis snuff”.

It turned out that snuff is literally just “finely ground tobacco” meaning that there isn’t too much required to make it. However, unlike cannabis, tobacco is “already active” and by snorting it, it will be absorbed by the mucus membrane.

Cannabis on the other hand requires to be “activated”. You can’t simply grind up buds and snort it, thinking that you’ll get high. This would mean, if you are going to attempt to make “Cannabis Snuff”, you’d have to decarboxilate the cannabis first and even then, it wouldn’t be as effective.

Snuff – at least from the practical application – doesn’t seem to be a “thing” in the cannabis market.

But Dip is an entirely different story

The initial discovery that “snuff was a pipedream” did put me off, but it also pointed me in the direction of discovering “dip”. The main brand that I stumbled upon comes from Humboldt County and is called “CannaDip”.

I saw a Youtuber named “outlaw” talk about it, and then went down the digital rabbit hole to see what it’s all about.

Once more, I went and did my research to see if I could make my own dip. After all, I am a sustainable stoner!

Before I tell you how to make your own dip, let’s take a closer look at why “dip” might be the way for you to ingest your cannabis.

Why Dip?

Arguably the most beneficial aspect of dip is the “titration effect”. In essence, you have the ability to consume consistent doses, and considering that the cannabis is absorbed and bypasses the liver – it’s a quick and easy way to medicate discreetly.

So to break down the benefits we can summarize them as follows;

  • Dose Specific Dip Baggies – Every Baggy contains the same amount of THC/contents, allowing you to follow a dose specific schedule
  • No smoke, consume it anywhere since you’re just chewing on it
  • Good for quick relief
  • Good as a medicinal option for public consumption
  • Good portable option

The company Cannadip believes that it will be one of the “main ways” to consume cannabis in the future. While I might not be 100% on board with this assessment, I do believe that dipping will provide some benefit to a select group of people.

Can I make my own dip at home?

While I didn’t find recipes online to make “cannabis dip”, I did find one to make “tobacco dip”. The following recipe take the original recipe for making Tobacco Dip, and transposes it to suit the cannabis market. So let’s get to it.

Via – Mississippi Mike

NOTE – The Video here is created to be a reference for making the “Tobacco version” of the dip, HOWEVER, the instructions will include a previous step to prepare the weed.

Step 1: Preparing the Weed

For this to work, you’ll first need to “activate the cannabis”. To do this, you’ll take an “oven ready tray” and place some finely ground cannabis on it. Preheat an oven to about 100º C and then place the tray with the cannabis inside for roughly 20-30 minutes.

This will activate the THC and allow you to make the dip.

Step 2: Preparing the Dip

In the next steps, you’ll essentially follow the instructions of Mississippi Mike in the video link above.

This includes;

  1. Taking Apple Juice and cooking it on a pan until it becomes “Syrup-like”
  2. Adding some Molasses
  3. Adding the Weed
  4. Making sure that it’s 100% mixed.

Once you’re done with the process, you can place it inside a can and can take it with you. Technically speaking, this should be all you need to make your own cannabis dip.

The people at Cannadip places the final mixture in a little bag, which will allow you to create doses based on specific weights.

While I haven’t tried this myself, I will be making my own “Cannadip” to see if it’s as effective as people claim.
