3 Canine Ailments that can be Treated with CBD Oil

CBD oil is a huge trend in veterinary wellness - and for good reason. More and more research is showing that CBD oil can treat a number of canine ailments. Because of this, more dog lovers are investing in CBD oil for their dogs.

CBD - an acronym for cannabidiol - is one of the many cannabinoids found in cannabis and hemp plants. Cannabinoids affect your ‘endocannabinoid system’ - a system that is found in all mammals, including humans and dogs. Just as cannabinoids can affect all parts of your body, it can affect your dog’s body, too. This includes the skin, hair, eyes, cardiovascular system, brain, digestive system, and more.

If you have a four-legged friend, you’ll know that it’s tough to see them struggle with health issues - especially since they can’t tell you how they’re feeling. Since CBD oil has a number of different uses, animal lovers find it to be a helpful tool in supporting their pets’ health.

Here are three of the ailments that can be treated with CBD oil.

1. Pain

CBD oil is often used by humans to soothe pain - and it can do the same with dogs. A study from 2008 showed that there’s a lot of evidence to suggest CBD can reduce pain in humans and other mammals.

CBD reduces pain by affecting the neurotransmitters in the brain that are affected by pain.

A study from 2018 looked at how CBD oil can help dogs with osteoarthritis. The study was conducted over a four-week period. It found that giving dogs two doses of CBD oil per day could relieve their pain and increase their activity levels.

Given that CBD has fewer side effects than most canine pain medications, many vets recommend it as a natural, safe treatment for pain. A 2019 survey of US-based veterinarians showed that many vets recommended CBD oil for pain relief in dogs.

2. Skin conditions

You might have noticed that CBD is popping up in beauty treatments nowadays. While some of it is all hype (CBD mascara? Really?) there’s some reasoning behind putting CBD in skin treatments.

CBD is a natural anti-inflammatory, making it great for reducing inflammatory skin conditions. A 2007 study published in the Journal of Dermatological Science found that cannabinoids can treat psoriasis, although it didn’t look at CBD on its own but rather a range of cannabinoids.

You can also use CBD oil for dogs’ skin. A study conducted in 2012 indicated that CBD, which is a natural anti-inflammatory, improved the skin of dogs with atopic dermatitis - a condition where your skin becomes inflamed because of an allergic reaction. However, this study only looked at skin samples from five dogs.

While more research is needed, CBD seems to be a promising treatment for canine skin conditions. What’s more is that it’s not harmful, so it’s worth trying out. Since healthy skin is necessary for a healthy coat and a happy pup, it’s no wonder why many people give their dogs CBD oil.

3. Epilepsy

We know that CBD can help humans who have seizures. Recently, the the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Epidiolex, a form of CBD-based medication for certain seizure disorders. This is because there’s a huge amount of evidence that CBD can treat seizures in humans.

While Epidiolex is intended for humans, there’s some evidence that CBD itself can be used to treat dogs who have seizures. A 2017 study looked at the effects of THC and CBD on epileptic dogs. The study suggested that these cannabinoids could reduce the severity of seizures in dogs.

The 2019 survey mentioned above showed that many veterinarians recommended CBD to treat seizures in dogs - and they found that CBD effectively reduced seizures, making them less severe and less frequent.

Other conditions

There are many other conditions that can be helped by CBD oil. For example, there’s some evidence that canine anxiety can be reduced by CBD oil. Many owners give their dogs CBD oil to reduce separation anxiety, anxiety about moving or new family members, and even fear of fireworks.

There’s also some evidence that CBD oil can reduce depression in mice and rat studies. Currently, scientists are conducting more research on how CBD can reduce depression in humans. Some pet owners claim that CBD oil improves the mood of their four-legged friends.

We need more research on how CBD oil can improve these conditions - but for now, the evidence is promising.

Is CBD oil safe for dogs?

CBD oil is generally safe for dogs, according to research. This is because mammals can tolerate a large amount of CBD. CBD also won’t get your dog high. One of the few side effects of giving CBD oil to dogs is that it can make them sleepy and lethargic.

Remember to always consult your vet before giving CBD oil to your dog. It’s best to find a vet that has experience with CBD and knows a lot about CBD for dogs, as some vets aren’t up-to-date with the latest research.

How to use CBD oil for dogs

CBD can come in the form of oils, tinctures, pills, and even dog treats. There are many great companies out there that sell high-quality CBD products for dogs.

It’s important to use the right dosage of CBD oil for dogs - it’s best to start with a small dosage and gradually work your way up. Remember that, like a multivitamin, it can take time for CBD to get to work. Don’t simply give it to your dog once or twice and expect radical changes. Be patient and consistent, and the results will speak for themselves!

Always use high-quality CBD oil from a reputable company. Unfortunately, some companies sell ‘CBD products’ that actually don’t contain CBD oil at all. In 2015, the FDA actually issued warning letters to companies that falsely marketed their products as containing CBD. So, be willing to do some research to find the best, most effective CBD oil for your dog - don’t just buy the cheapest stuff.

Remember, your pet deserves the very best!
