Cannabis and Moon Gardening: The Cultivation Technique of the Future?

cannabis and moon gardening

To grow any plant effectively, it is important to follow good gardening techniques as this will enable it to grow healthily. These techniques include sowing, watering, pruning, weeding, and fertilizing before harvesting. Moon gardening offers the opportunity of carrying all these out following the lunar cycle. It is also the easiest and most rewarding method of planting. It is an old science-based cultivation method that focuses on the effects of the moon on the development and growth of your plants to maximize them for their benefit. It is now being adopted by modern cannabis growers after discovering that making use of this method allows the plants to produce healthier, better quality and bountiful yields.

It is said that the moon affects all life on earth and this explains how the moon cycle has effects on many things in nature such as the rise and fall of the tide, the sowing, and harvesting of plants among others. The moon cycle has different phases that have different effects on your plant and this includes the gravitational effects on the plant moisture which makes it flow up and down in sync with its different phases.  Moon gardening not only allows increased moisture for your plant but also has a significant effect on germination of your seeds, encouraging them to swell and sprout as this is when they absorb water the most.

The major principle behind moon gardening is that the moon travels through the 12 zodiac signs in a month which is roughly about 27 or 28 days. What this translates to is that the moon spends about 2 or 2 1/2  days on each sign while the sun stays on each sign for about a month. This means there are times the sun and moon meet on the same sign which is what occurs when there’s a new moon, the full moon occurs as a result of the sun and moon being on opposite signs. The gravitational pull of the sun and moon have times when they collide to have effects on your plants, this could be in the form of a high sap run or rest period for your plants.

Advantages of Moon Gardening

It reduces the risk of pest attack on your plant as they grow stronger than normal.

You get higher yields from plants grown with this method.

Moon gardening helps your plant grow healthier and faster as its seeds germinate earlier than those that were grown differently.

Moon gardening works in tune with nature especially with regards to the lunar cycle which consists of four periods of seven days each split into two phases. The first phase consisting of two periods where the moon increases in shape and becomes more visible is referred to as the ‘waxing phase’. After the full moon, the moon begins to reduce in size for the last two periods of the ‘waning phase’ and then the cycle is repeated.

The moonlight intensity during ‘waxing’ influences the growth of the plant as it stimulates leaf growth while ‘waning’ of the moon helps in developing root growth and strengthening below ground.  The waxing and waning phases of the moon are divided into the four quarters representing the shapes of the moon at those times which are crescent, gibbous, disseminating and balsamic. These moon shapes majorly signify periods to carry out certain actions on your plant like the planting of your seeds, feeding of your plants with more nutrients, ripening, and harvesting and finally, destroying and clearing of weeds in preparation for another round of planting. However, it is important to keep in mind that calculation is best done with your moon calendar for accuracy.

The Moon Calendar

Moon gardening is highly dependent on timing and a moon calendar helps to keep track of that and tell you on when to do things at the best possible time for your plant. It also helps you pace activities that need to be carried out for your plant and not just do the same things every time which might end up not only wasting resources but also affect the health of your plant.

The moon calendar is a simple yet efficient way of monitoring your plants when moon gardening that only needs to be set on the day of the new moon for each month. It divides the days of the month into 6 separate periods which guides you on the best days to carry out specific tasks on your plant such as sowing, pruning, harvesting, etc.

There are several moon calendars out there but it is recommended to look out for some features when getting yours.

Sustainability: This means having a calendar that can be used for a long time so there’s no need to get one again making it a cheaper bargain in the long run.

Ease of use: It should be easy and uncomplicated to use for everyone.

Usability in any part of the world in any climate.
