Can Sanders Legalize Cannabis on the “First Day as President”?
As always – presidential election years are always the kookiest. It’s the time when our mighty overlords come down from their “important business” and pander to the whims of the masses. It’s when we get to see the institutionalized corruption within party politics as well as the “political-shit posting” by the opposing candidate’s PR teams.
Oh – it gets brutal!
This year – apparently, Warren remembered a meeting that happened two years ago where Sanders – her now political opponent – said that he “didn’t think that a woman could win the white-house” – [Source]
This my friends – is all a game! Do not buy into the bullshit for the love of “SpenBos”
What’s happening here is that the Democratic Party wants Warren to be the one running against Donald Trump. The people – from what I have seen, are once more going for underdogs like Sanders and Gabbard – at least on the democratic side of the isle.
Now with all of this, we have to remember that politics is all a ratings game and one of the hot ticket topics this presidential election cycle is…marijuana!
Sanders have always been Pro Pot!
I don’t care if you think Sanders is a crazy old dude with radical ideas or a closet fascist coming for your guns – there is one thing about Sanders that you can’t deny…the dude has been consistent. Sanders have been shit on by the democratic party for so many years – but he is far more interested in doing what he things is right.
One of these things include his platform on cannabis reform. Recently, he claimed that “He would legalize cannabis the first day he was sworn into office” [Source] His exact words was, “I’ll end the destructive war on drugs”, which in my mind means he’s going to dismantle the Controlled Substance Act.
If that was the case, and if I was able to vote, or even a real human being as opposed to some digital construct of a creative cannabis user or commonly known as “The voice in your head RIGHT NOW”.
But then, he went on and said; “On my first day in office through executive order we will legalize marijuana in every state in this country.”
Obviously, the stoner inside each and every one of us danced for joy – but realistically, can Sanders do that? I mean, Trump and Obama used Executive Orders more than they used Toilet Paper – drone bombing people with unilateral decision making.
Does this mean that if “We The People” voted for Sanders – that he could actually legalize cannabis on day one? Let’s take a closer look.
Can Sanders Truly Legalize Pot on Day 1?
If there is one political candidate – that if he actually had the power – that would legalize cannabis on day one it seems like it would be Sanders. Nonetheless, even the president doesn’t have unchecked power and there are legal procedures in place that might hinder his “presidential desire”.
The executive branch does have the power under the Controlled Substance Act to reclassify cannabis without any further action from Congress. However, this would require participation from the attorney general and health and human service secretary.
If Sanders happens to win “The Throne”, his AG and HHSS won’t be sworn in on the first day. This means, if he wins – he’d be working with Trump’s crew. Unless, Trump’s crew weren’t ideologically charged – the odds of Sanders convincing them to legalize weed seems highly unlikely.
Furthermore, even if Sanders manages to pull that off – every state and county has their own version of “marijuana laws” and a president can do nothing more than “strongly advise” those entities to repeal their own laws.
Is Sanders a liar?
Aren’t all politicians really professional spinsters of the truth? They like to exaggerate and we like to give them rope. Sanders is catering to his demographic – which predominantly are weed smokers. For some reason, “old man Sanders” simply jives with the youngsters.
Sanders however, is not a liar but an “exaggerator”. He wants to legalize weed, he wants you to know that he strongly desires to do so – and so he’ll make outlandish claims like, “I’m going to legalize weed on day one” which could very well have been “Free Cheetos for everyone”, because – most people know it simply won’t happen.
Nonetheless, what Sanders is telling us that he is totally on board for legalization and in the case that he wins the presidency – weed will most definitely be legal. He’ll also work on expunging old records and doing a whole bunch of other stuff.
Is this good? Is it bad? Fuck if I know – I don’t think that any of that matters anyhow. The only real change that matters happens on a local level – so this presidential cycle, just remember to turn up you “Bullshit-o-meter” and if you decide to vote – vote for the candidate that resonate most with your own personal values.
