CBD tincture, capsule, or balm? Which is best for you?

what is the best way to take cbd

By now you’re probably familiar with all the different ways you can consume CBD. In the last few years, CBD products have all but saturated the market, and the variety of products now available in the market run the gamut from the sensible, such as CBD capsules and gummies, to the downright bizarre, like CBD toothpicks and nail polish. But out of the many ways you can get your dose of CBD, which one is best? And more importantly, which one is best for YOU? In this article, we tackle the benefits of different CBD-ingesting methods and what each of them entails.

CBD tincture

Although they may look similar, typically coming in dark glass dropper bottles, tinctures shouldn’t be confused with oils. Unlike oils, tinctures suspend the hemp extract in 60 to 70 percent distilled alcohol and a mixture of glycerin, alcohol, and cinnamon/peppermint oil.

Benefits: Tinctures offer higher bioavailability compared to CBD oil due to the presence of alcohol, which serves as a preservative and enhances its shelf-life. However, when it comes to potency, tinctures are usually not as powerful as oils.

How to administer: Like CBD oil, tinctures can be taken sublingually (under the tongue) or can also be added to food and beverages.

Best for: Epilepsy and seizure sufferers, or people new to the world of CBD and want to start with a low dose.

CBD oil

Out of all the forms of CBD, oil is the most expensive and most potent. With CBD oil, the Cannabidiol is extracted directly from the hemp plant’s seeds, flowers, and stalks. It also contains proteins, fatty acids, vitamins, and nutrients. CBD oils contain a carrier oil like coconut oil or MCT oil, plus a base of vegetable glycerin.

Benefits: CBD oil can have a range of effects from physical relaxation to pain management and stress relief. It can be used to treat insomnia, anxiety, pain and inflammation, as well as epilepsy and seizures.

How to administer: Apply a few drops of oil under your tongue and hold it there for 90 seconds, then swallow. This will allow the CBD to penetrate the frenulum where it is absorbed and enters the bloodstream.

Other forms of CBD oil include capsules, ‘dabbable’ oil, and CBD vape oil.

Best for: Insomniacs, people who want overall health benefits of CBD

CBD topicals

CBD topicals have gotten more popular in the last few years, thanks to the relatively new intersection between the beauty industry and the cannabis industry. CBD’s newfound reputation as a skincare godsend has created the kind of buzz that isn’t expected to fade anytime soon. But it’s not just all about soft and dewy skin. Their main benefit is pain alleviation, making them great for post-work out soreness and muscle pain. CBD topicals include lotions, balms, and creams. Unlike oils and tinctures, topicals target skin-related ailments and pain, like psoriasis, dermatitis, arthritis and inflammation. They typically contains ingredients such as shea butter, coconut oil, avocado oil, jojoba, and vitamin E.

Benefits: Topicals are a great way to focus on specific problem areas rather than the whole body, which oils and tinctures typically target. Using topicals every day, a few times a day, allows the body to uptake CBD quickly and build levels in the affected areas, preventing inflammation from getting worse.

How to administer: Simply rub the topical on the affected area until it is completely absorbed into the skin. Do this twice or thrice a day and apply to clean skin.

Best for: Athletes and former athletes, people with joint/muscle pain, arthritis sufferers, people with skin conditions

CBD pre-rolls

CBD pre-rolls, or CBD joints, offer Cannabidiol in a smokeable form, allowing for quicker onset and higher bioavailability. They come in the form of hemp cigarettes and offer an easy, quick way to consume CBD, and not to mention familiar. Pre-rolls are easy to self-titrate, too, so if you think you need more, all you need to do is smoke more.

Benefits: As mentioned earlier, smoking offers higher bioavailability as the CBD does not have to pass through the digestive system first, as is the case with other ingestible methods, and instead, goes through the lungs where it can be absorbed into the bloodstream immediately.

One CBD pre-roll usually contains anywhere from 70 mg of CBD to 150 mg, which is much more than you’re getting with oils and tinctures, where one dose usually clocks in at 10 to 20 mg of CBD.

How to administer: Light up and smoke the pre-roll. You can smoke as little or as much as you want and can save the rest of the CBD cigarette later.

Best for: People suffering from depression, anxiety, or just want to benefit from the overall benefits of CBD
