Understanding Kratom

Let's get started with kratom basics. If you want to learn how to grow kratom, then you're going to need to know the origins of kratom and how it works.

Kratom (Mitragyna speciose) is a tropical tree that grows in Southeast Asia. It has been used by villagers for therapeutic uses traditionally.

The villagers would use kratom to stay energized and focused by chewing on the leaves. It was also used to help addicts fight against opioid addictions.

It was originally recorded in the late 1800s by a scientist named Pieter Willem Korthals. He documented that the villagers would use it for energy and a form of opium.

The leaves of the tropical tree are removed, set out, and completely dried, then crushed into a powdered form. After that, it is consumed either through powder or pill. Kratom is directly related to the coffee plant and can offer a stimulating and euphoric feeling.

Where Does Kratom Grow?

Kratom is originally from Southeast Asia. It is indigenous to Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Myanmar, and Papua New Guinea. This is where it was originally discovered and documented being used as traditional medicines in the nineteenth century.

It grows best in tropical climates such as the countries along the Pacific Rim. Although it is indigenous to these countries, it isn't legal in all of them. Let's look at the legalities sounding the usage and growth of kratom.

Is It Legal to Grow Kratom?

Throughout Southeast Asia, kratom is controlled. Many of the countries have taken measures to ban the plant completely. Here is a list of countries that currently have banned kratom.

  • Australia

  • Denmark

  • Latvia

  • Lithuania

  • Malaysia

  • Poland

  • Romania

  • Thailand

  • United Kingdom

Although illegal in those counties, Germany, Canada, and the United States have all made kratom legal.

The U.S. though let local officials make a stance within legalizing the usage of kratom. Within the U.S. there are 44 states that have made kratom usage legal. Leaving 6 states with laws banning kratom.

Alabama, Arkansas, Wisconsin, Tennessee, Vermont, and Indian have moved to make the natural plant illegal. Alabama has even gone to make kratom a schedule 1 controlled substance

When it comes to growing kratom, it depends on your state laws. Each state has set its own laws in regard to buying, selling, consuming, and growing kratom. It may be legal to grow but for only aesthetic purposes in some states. Check within your local laws before you attempt to start growing kratom.

How to Grow Kratom

The natural climate that kratom thrives in is warm, humid, and nutrient-rich soil environments. This is the best type of climate for your kratom tree to survive in.

Kratom trees require both light and shade as it grows. Too much sun or too much shade can either damage or kill the plant. The plant should be exposed to sunlight most of the day, but during the hottest time, it should be covered in shade. A canopy is the best way to do this.

The plant will also grow well surrounding other plants. The roots can help keep the soil loose. Kratom trees also help with local ecosystems by providing nutrients in the soil.

Kratom plants grow well in greenhouses that have indoor fluorescent lighting. Using high-pressure sodium lights is also a great way to help them thrive.

A warm breeze is going to help promote kratom leaves to produce alkaloids. This is the main ingredient in the leaves that give you positive effects. Try putting a fan within your controlled environment that creates a gentle breeze.

Utilize a soil pH testing kit to ensure your soil is rich and perfect for the plant to thrive in. You can also purchase a drip-irrigation system to help you further. These are great tools to use when growing the kratom plant.

Where to Grow Kratom

When looking at where to grow a kratom plant, it's best to know where your seeds originated from. This is going to help you know what the best climate recreation will be for your plant to grow.

For example: If your plant seeds originated from Mandalay, you can look up the exact humidity levels for that region. Once you know that, you can recreate the climate within your greenhouse or incubator. Creating the perfect environment for the kratom tree to thrive.

In the United States

The best place within the U.S. to grow kratom is Florida. Here you will find the most success since its high humidity levels and its temperatures. States that are colder or drier will have a much harder time growing.

If you live in a cold or dry state, then you will need to create a controlled environment for your plant.

Kratom Environments

As we mentioned before, kratom trees love it when it's hot and humid. In order to make this happen, it's best to have a pH testing kit. This will allow you to measure the Ph level within your soil.

Kratom trees like to have a pH level range of around 5.5 and 6.5. You will also need to make sure you can drain water from the plant in order to keep that pH level. This will help you to keep perfect dampness in the soil.

The best way to grow kratom is within a controlled environment that allows you to manipulate the local atmosphere. The plant can grow in areas such as Florida as we mentioned earlier, but it is extremely hard and not always successful. The best route is to have a greenhouse for your tree to mature in.

Kratom Seeds

If you have a good environment to start growing kratom, you're going to need to start with some kratom seeds.

In order to obtain kratom seeds, you're mostly not going to find it easy to get them here in the U.S. or Canada. However, some merchants do sell kratom seeds, so check with your trust merchant to find out if they sell them.

Once a kratom tree has been harvested, the sees will no longer be able to produce. Making it difficult to require fresh seeds.

You should also keep in mind that not all kratom seeds will germinate. So when you plant the seeds, it's best to plant multiple at one time so you increase your chances of growing a producing tree.

Tips for Growing Kratom

If you're able to attain fresh kratom seeds, plant them immediately. This is for the best chance of your seeds to germinate. Dry seeds from merchants do work, but fresh is the best ones if you're able to get a hold of them.

Kratom trees typically take 2 years to mature and produce leaves that contain alkaloids. If you remove the leaves before then, it may not have the alkaloid profile. So refrain from harvesting your kratom before it has completely matured in 2 years.

You will want to inspect your plant every day. Check to see if the soil is damp or not. If the soil is dry it will need more water. You don't want to flood the plant but rather keep the soil damp.

If the soil is continuously flooded, this can seriously damage or kill the plant.

Remember to adjust the temperatures and humidities levels accordingly. Check with the seed's boring country and follow its weather patterns.

When harvesting the leaves, it is best to harvest in the fall. This is the season the leaves begin to naturally fall off. This will give you the most potent leaves for harvest.
