An ethnography is a written description of a particular group or culture. It’s usually written from the viewpoint of a member of that group.


An ethnography can also involve observational studies and interviews, typically with members of the group. As such, an ethnography can be considered a precursor to a case study.


In marketing, an ethnography can offer insights into the lifestyle of a consumer segment – for example, the ways in which they live, their perceived strengths and worries, and so on. This can help you develop products and marketing messages that meet the needs of those consumers.


What do ethnographies cover?
An ethnography can cover anything pertinent to a group or culture. However, ethnographies generally include the following:
