The Seattle Hippie Speedball :  Why Cannabis and Coffee Work so Well Together!

marijuana and coffee

We go together like two peas in a pod or more era appropriate – Like Cannabis and Coffee!

The drug that I’ve been taking the longest and the most abused/consumed drug on the planet is COFFEE!

Well, technically caffeine is the most consumed drug on the planet with at least 80% of adults consuming this psychoactive substance.

In other words, the idea of drug free America is and has always been a myth. However this subplot is not the idea behind this article.

Today we’re talking about the “Seattle Hippie Speedball, which is essentially just mixing some coffee with bud.

In this article we’ll discuss some of the origins of the mix, which is far more interesting that you’d think, and we’re going to be talking about how the two work together to create a more functional high

The Origins of Coffee & Cannabis

This entire article was inspired by a post I saw on Reddit where the user PhCBD posted a video that explained how “prior to prohibition the official remedy for too much cannabis was coffee” as was published in their Pharmacopea.

This is because the caffeine turns of adenosine receptors in the brain, which in turn counter-acts some of the effects of THC on the endocannabinoid system. This in turn reduces some of the effects of cannabis.

In other words, when you’re too high – a good ol’ cup of Joe can help the Jane settle.

I have long been co-consuming cannabis and caffeine for years now to great effect. It’s one of the reasons why I can smoke so much cannabis and still get work done.

Well, to be honest I don’t smoke THAT much cannabis, but I’d recon more than the average consumer.

Nonetheless, caffeine works wonders to counteract the droopiness of cannabis.

If you’ve ever indulged in an entire afternoon of weed smoking, you’ll know that smoking joint after joint, or dab after dab – you start getting fuzzy.

Other words to describe the feeling is heavy, thick, slow, lethargic, sleepy, etc.

All of this is exactly what caffeine counteracts. Coffee makes you sharp, energetic, jittery, etc.

It’s almost like the two drugs are on opposite spectrums, meaning that if you drink too much coffee, a bit of weed can help you take off the edge.

Smoking or Infusing my Coffee?

This really comes down to what you have available. Not everyone has access to tinctures or oils, so if you can only smoke and drink coffee – that’s what you do!

However, I have experimented with different methods of consuming caffeine and cannabis together. I personally like to put some CBD oil in my coffee in the mornings.

It really helps you stay focused with having zero euphoria attached to it, except for the euphoria associated with the coffee.

Some of you may say, “Coffee doesn’t produce euphoria” of which I’d respond, “Try going without coffee for a month and see how miserable you really are.”

I have infused my coffee with THC tincture as well, which was blended with some Gin, so that was an interesting experience.

When I consumed the Gin-Cannabis-Coffee Infusion, it was as if your entire body was relaxed but your mind was wide awake.

However, the method I typically implore simply for the sake of ease is smoking and drinking some coffee.

I love to have a joint ready, light it up and start off planning out my day with a good strong cup of coffee. I don’t finish the joint, not by a long shot.

I only smoke enough cannabis to feel it and then stop smoking. Then, I simply continue to drink my coffee as usual.

By the time the two substances combine, you’re feeling good, better than good – great! You’ve got energy and you’re relaxed, it’s a good state to be in.

 Which is more dangerous?

In 2018, researchers identified 92 cases of caffeine related overdoses. In the case of cannabis, a fatal overdose is highly unlikely as confirmed by the CDC.

Basically the worst that can happen to you on cannabis is greening out. Granted a green out is no joke. I’ve seen people talk about horrific hallucinations coming at them after eating one too many brownies.

Of course, these horrific images are merely the unconscious mind breaking through the veil under the temporary psychosis of consuming a psychoactive substance – in other words, “when you’re Tripping some serious balls.”

It is nothing as permanent as those 92 poor souls who died from a caffeine overdose in 2018.

Therefore, if we were to talk about lethality, cannabis is still a safer choice than caffeine. Yet both of these substances are mostly safe for the vast majority of people.

Which one is more addictive?

Technically speaking, the addiction of coffee and cannabis are within a similar range, but on a personal level – I find the lack of coffee far more disturbing than the lack of cannabis.

I have gone on many purges in my life, but I have rarely left coffee for a prolonged time. Recently this epiphany hit me like a slap to the face. One of these days I’m going to go through a complete detox of caffeine to see what it’s all about.

You can’t know how a drug interacts with your body until you remove it completely. This goes for the most socially accepted addiction on the planet too – coffee!

The Sticky Bottom Line

I for one love the combination of coffee and cannabis. It’s a match made in heaven. I also like Maté and Cannabis, which has a similar effect than coffee, except its less acidic in my opinion.
