Breaking News: Did Trump Really Sign An Executive Order To Reclassify Weed?

As if it couldn't get any worse for Democrats, President Trump said, "Hold my beer..."

On December 18, 2025, US President Donald Trump signed an Executive Order that directly reclassifies cannabis at the federal level as a less dangerous drug.

You read that correctly. That does not say Democratic President Barak Obama.  That does not say Democratic President Joe Biden.  That does not say Democratic leaders Senator Chuck Schumer or Senator Corey Booker.  Nope, is says Republican President Donald Trump. To really rub salt in the wounds of listless Democrats, it wasn't even a moderate Republican who got the job done, who you handed an easy lay-up victory to, no, it was Donald Trump.

We thought the clown show known as the Democratic party in 2025 couldn't get any worse, well think again.

This breaking news sent ripples throughout the country, and it might just finally be the news we were waiting for. The wait has taken many years, as Trump has promised time and again that he would help reclassify marijuana yet thanks to legal complexity, bureaucracy, and politics among other issues, it just never happened.

Senators Booker and Schumer wasted 5 years of peoples' lives half-heartedly pushing cannabis reform and then refused to budge for years on cannabis law changes until massive social equity goals were included. The sad part is that if Senator Booker had looked at any state run social equity program for cannabis, he would  have been seen they were massive failures overall.  It seemed like Democrats would never be able to get cannabis reform passed in a conservative Republican world!

Until now. It just seemed that President Trump never prioritized reclassifying it.

While reclassifying marijuana has numerous significant benefits, one of the biggest advantages is that it will no longer pose a major barrier to scientific studies and medical research. The Schedule I status blocks research since drugs listed on Schedule I are considered not to have any medical use, and also have a high potential for addiction.

This makes it almost impossible for researchers to access quality marijuana for clinical and research purposes. They would then need special permissions and approvals from the DEA which are extremely complex, lengthy, and restrictive.

Reclassification has always been critical for paving the way to cannabis research, leading to safe medical use as well as regulated public health strategies.

This might just be what we’ve all been waiting for.

Donald Trump just took Democrats out behind the woodshed and gave them a historic spanking.

One that will forever be documented in Wikipedia as "President Donald Trump's cannabis reform order..."

What's next?  The Republican Civil Rights Act?  The Donald Trump Transgender Rights Committtee?

What The Executive Order Entails

The EO would remove weed out of Schedule I, the strictest drug category which puts weed alongside heroin, and move it to Schedule III. “I’m pleased to announce that I will be signing an Executive Order to reschedule marijuana from a Schedule I to a Schedule III controlled substance with legitimate medical uses,” said the president.

“This reclassification order will make it far easier to conduct marijuana-related medical research, allowing us to study benefits, potential dangers and future treatments,” said Trump. “It’s going to have a tremendously positive impact,” he added.

The Executive Order, entitled Increasing Medical Marijuana and Cannabidiol Research, instructs the US Attorney General to go through with the regulatory framework that eventually changes the federal classification of marijuana. In addition, the EO instructs other agencies, including the NIH, FDA, and the Health and Human Services, to help expand scientific research primarily on the drug’s medical use in order to develop safer cannabinoid therapies.

According to the administration, the decision is rooted in new scientific findings that help support the medical benefits of cannabis.

Trump disclosed to reporters earlier this week that the decision to reclassify was popular since “it leads to tremendous amounts of research that can’t be done unless you reclassify, so we are looking at that very strongly.”

Cannabis: A Schedule III Drug

The Controlled Substances Act (CSA) lists five ‘schedules’ or categories. Cannabis has been listed as a Schedule I substance; the most restrictive of all. In contrast, Schedule III drugs are considered to possess low to moderate potentials for abuse and are recognized for having medical uses.

Examples of drugs in the Schedule III category include ketamine, Ritalin, Tylenol with Codeine, and Nabilone, among others. Moving cannabis to a Schedule III category means that the federal government is finally recognizing its medical benefits, while also greatly reducing the regulatory burden.

When Trump signed the Executive Order, it directs its agencies to expedite these changes much more quickly. Signing the EO doesn’t automatically transfer cannabis from Schedule I to Schedule III without going through the process that involves regulators.

Why Reclassification Is Significant

Many supporters believe that the biggest benefit of reclassification is the removal of barriers to clinical and scientific research. After all, weed has been in the Schedule I status for decades, and it’s been so challenging to study the plant’s therapeutic properties and any long-term effects.

This change can significantly speed up the development of evidence-based cannabis drugs that can treat a multitude of diseases, ranging from mental to physical health. These include, but are not limited to cancer, epilpesy, chronic pain, anxiety, PTSD, and so much more.

Additionally, there will be serious economic benefits to reclassiciation. Heavy taxes and banking obstacles have made it difficult to do business in the industry because of the Schedule I status of cannabis. Since many businesses don’t have the ability to subsidize normal expenses, most also end up paying higher taxes. Rescheduling weed is key to unlocking tax relief while also improving overall access to capital.

Furthermore, rescheduling cannabis marks a momentous shift in drug policy. Federal drug policy has been too tightly controlled for the past few decades, following a prohibitionist stance that benefited no one. While the Executive Order does not legalize pot, it does an important job of acknowledging the plant’s medical utility and changing the narrative that weed is addictive and dangerous.

It’s a signal that there is broader acceptance of evidence-based laws instead of ideological rigidity. Also, it reflects that cannabis is mainstream and there’s no doubt about it.

CONCLUSION

Trump’s executive order reclassifying weed as a Schedule III substance is breakthrough news for patients, researchers, and the cannabis industry as a whole. It doesn’t legalize weed nor does it legalize recreational use, but by removing federal barriers to research, it helps us progress so much faster.

The Executive Order validates cannabis’ medical potential and greatly eases regulatory hurdles that eventually will improve access, promote innovation and development, and help lay the groundwork for better reforms in the future.
