Cannabis and coconut oil infusions are become more popular these days. Combining these two can actually make one of the most powerful natural medicines on earth. Cannabis and coconut oil are already highly medicinal in their own right, so when these are combined you’ve got a super potent remedy in your hands.

Benefits of Coconut Oil

Coconut oil has a multitude of health benefits; it’s one of the most widely used natural ingredients in skin care, hair care, digestion, and even immunity. But because we’re talking about cannabis, let’s discuss the 3 most relevant reasons why you should be taking coconut oil:

It contains lauric acid, which is a medium-chain fatty acid rich in antimicrobial properties. Many cannabis topicals use coconut oil as a base because it provides added protection from infection. Lauric acid also helps to balance cholesterol levels, making it extremely healthy for the heart.

Caprylic acid is also a medium-chain fatty acid but it has excellent anti-fungal properties. Consuming coconut oil for its caprylic acid content will protect you from fungal infections such as candida.

Vitamin E is an antioxidant which is beneficial for healthy hair and skin. Although coconut oil contains small amounts of Vitamin E, it does a great job of helping the body absorb it more efficiently.

Why Combine Cannabis and Coconut Oil?

Cannabis contains fat soluble compounds, which means that they break down more effectively in fat instead of water. This means that if you want to maximize the health benefits of cannabinoids, cannabis should be consumed with fat. Most cannabis users are more familiar with using cannabis-infused butter, or cannabutter as it’s popularly called. Using coconut oil as fat is one of the most underrated ways of consuming cannabis as medicine.

Compared to all other kinds of fat, coconut oil is the most powerful for nutrient absorption. When you have a better quality carrier fat, the more effective the extraction. Coconut oil is a pure and rich kind of fat, which means that the cannabinoids such as THC and CBD can bond more efficiently. Coconut oil is high in saturated fats, since it contains 90% versus the 15% of olive oil. However, consuming coconut oil won’t make you fat, so don’t worry.

THC FATTY ACID

The body breaks down medium-chain fatty acids more efficiently, and they are metabolized and converted into energy in the liver. This means that the body can burn the fat better and use them for energy immediately. When the liver metabolizes cannabis, this results in a stronger psychoactive experience. More THC is converted into 11-hydroxy-THC, a psychoactive metabolite. Consuming edibles with coconut oil will be much stronger compared to smoking it, especially if you use coconut oil with medium-chain triglycerides, also known as MCT oils because it releases cannabinoids so much more rapidly than other oils or fats.

In layman’s terms, consuming cannabis-infused coconut oil makes the nutrients in cannabis more available and easily absorbed by the body.

How To Make Cannabis Coconut Oil

CANNABIS OIL

For best results, use an organic or virgin coconut oil. Taking just half a teaspoon of the stuff daily will already give you significant health benefits.

Put 1 gram of decarboxylated cannabis for every ounce of coconut oil.

The crushed cannabis should be placed in a glass jar; then add the coconut oil.

Seal the lid on the jar well and put it in a pan of water.

Gradually heat the water and maintain it just below boiling level for one hour. This prevents the oil from overheating.

Use a strainer to get rid of any solid residue from the mixture. Use a cheesecloth if necessary.

Squeeze any juice out of the cannabis.

Once you’ve completed these steps, you can consume the cannabis coconut oil directly, use it as a topical, or pour it over other kinds of food. Cooking with cannabis coconut oil is also a great idea as it’s a much healthier substitute compared to other kinds of cooking oils, but make sure that you keep the temperature below 315 F. Any higher than this and you’ll reach the boiling point for the active compounds in cannabis and it will diminish the medicinal properties.
