Evil comes in many forms, and Monsanto is one of them.
Monsanto’s crimes against humanity are so heinous that over the years it has earned itself the nickname of being “the most evil company in the world.” Ever since its small beginnings, Monsanto has been consistent in unethical business, manufacturing products that are deadly to humans and have turned a blind eye to all of them.
History of Monsanto
Monsanto was founded in 1901 by John Francis Queeny, a pharmaceutical veteran and a member of the Knights of Malta. Queeny was married to Olga Mendez Monsanto, after whom Monsanto Company is named. The very first product Monsanto ever made was a poisonous sweetener called saccharin, which was then sold to Coca-Cola. The government was fully aware that saccharin was poisonous, and they sued Monsanto with the hopes of preventing it from being manufactured again although they lost. Monsanto continues to poison humanity through Coca-Cola.
In the 1920’s, Monsanto expands its business to include drugs as well as industrial chemicals. The company became the largest producer of harmful drugs including aspirin and acetylsalicylic acid. Monsanto didn’t stop there: they also created the first polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB’s); which, although was welcome by engineers, was extremely harmful for the environment. PCB’s were considered a wonder chemical, had numerous industrial applications, and an oil that never burned. PCB’s are carcinogens, and are still widely used in liquid sealants, lubricants, cutting oils, and hydraulic fluids. Exposure to PCB’s have been linked to reproductive, immune system, and developmental disorders, among its many harmful effects to health.
Over the course of the next few decades, Monsanto continued to manufacture even more deadly substances. By the 1930’s they created poisonous cleaning products, soaps, detergents, synthetic plastics and rubbers. But one of its most atrocious acts was in its involvement in the creation of the notoriously deadly Agent Orange.
This happened in the 1960’s, when they partnered with DOW Chemical to produce Agent Orange, a chemical laced with dioxin which was to be used for the US invasion of Vietnam. This resulted in the deaths of more than 500,000 Vietnamese civilians, contamination of over 3 million people, and more than half a million babies born with congenital defects. Today, thousands of American military veterans are still suffering from the side effects of exposure to Agent Orange.
Monsanto is also responsible for introducing cancerous aspartame to the global food supply, the FDA-approved Synthetic Bovine Growth Hormone or rBGH (which is banned in Canada, Europe, and other countries), genetically modified crops, toxic herbicides… the list of monstrosities just doesn’t end.
High On The Idea Of Cannabis
Last October, Germany’s Bayer company purchased massive GMO seed company Monsanto in a deal worth $66 billion. The merger is supposedly one of the largest all-cash deals ever carried out.
But what does this mean for the cannabis industry? Monsanto is already a dominant player in global agriculture, and guess what: 40% of all the GMO crops are actually grown in the United States. Out of all thos, 93% of genetically modified soy and 80% of the corn are owned by Monsanto. The USA is also the world’s largest exporter of both soybeans and corn, and the 3rd largest exporter of cotton - Monsanto also happens to genetically modify cotton too.
The biggest telltale sign of this is the fact that Monsanto has a close relationship with Scotts Miracle-Gro, which is branching out to legal cannabis. The company has intentions of expanding in states where legal cannabis is already present. They’ve also already purchased Botanicare, General Hydroponics, and Gativa. Scotts Miracle-Gro CEO Jim Hagedorn told Forbes in an interview that they saw an opportunity in other aspects of cultivation. He said: “‘We’re doing it. If you don’t like it, leave. We’re doing it. It’s beyond stopping. And we’re not getting into pot growing. We’re talking dirt, fertilizer, pesticides, growing systems, lights. You know it’s a multibillion-dollar business, and we’ve got no growth in our core.”
It’s no secret that Monsanto is interested in cannabis, and that they’ve been experimenting to genetically manipulate it especially THC. In 1998, GW Pharmaceuticals entered into an agreement with Hortapharm, a Dutch company that also has the world’s largest collection of cannabis seeds. The agreement allows GW Pharmaceuticals to use Hortapharm cannabis for their experiments and research. In 2003, German Bayer AG had a joint research project with GW Pharmaceuticals to study a cannabis-based extract. Four years later, Bayer AG agreed to exchange the results of their research with Monsanto, which gave Monsanto easy access to information about genetically modifying cannabis. In 2009, GW Pharmaceuticals announced that they were successful in genetically modifying a cannabis plant and was able to create a new breed of the plant.
Billionaire George Soros, who happens to own 500,000 shares of Monsanto, funded the legalization of pot in Uruguay. Legalization in Uruguay allows Soros to invest in cannabis, and some think that South America is home to Monsanto’s experiments on genetically modified pot. Since cultivating cannabis is allowed in Uruguay, this gives Monsanto a huge lucrative market to take advantage of even with just patented cannabis seeds. When Uruguay was under President Mujica, who was responsible for promoting legalizing cannabis, he also voiced that he wanted a unique genetic code for the plant which he thought would keep the black market at bay.
Everything is all tied together… the forces behind GMO cannabis are silently working to take advantage of cannabis, and it’s up to us to make sure that people are informed about it.
