Easy To Make Healthy Herbal Cannabis Cough Drops

Cough drops, also called throat lozenges or cough sweets, are small medicated candies that are intended to help provide relief and help stop coughs or sore throat. These little candies are easy to find, available over the counter in every single drugstore.

Yes, they’re effective, but many of them contain lots of things that you don’t want to be putting in your body if you’re after a healthy lifestyle, such as pharmaceutical medications including painkillers. Common painkillers such as benzydamine hydrochloride as well as flurbiprofen are some of the NSAIDS (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) that are used in the manufacture of many cough drops and throat lozenges because they are intended to help get rid of swelling and pain. Side effects of NSAIDS include stomach ulcers, stomach pain, heartburn, headaches, kidney or liver problems, and high blood pressure.

Besides, not everyone is a huge fan of menthol; some people just aren’t fond of sucking on a candy that tastes of the overpowering flavor of mint or peppermint. Why not make your own herbal cannabis cough drops? Cannabis already contains all the healing properties that you’ll need to make it through a cough or sore throat: anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antibacterial. So the next time you’ve got a sore throat, you can easily make your own medicine from home.

This recipe tastes much better and it’ll give you an awesome high, too! You can customize the recipe based on the effect you’re after, plus it doesn’t use any sugar, just good old honey.

Herbs for treating coughs include: cypress, basil, Echinacea, elderberry juice, frankincense, eucalyptus, lavender, ginger, lemon peel, peppermint, oregano, rosemary, and thyme.

Herbs for sore throat: fenugreek, juniper berry, cayenne powder, marshmallow root, licorice root, slippery elm bark.

Ingredients:

1 ½ cup of water
6 tablespoons of your herbs of choice, finely ground up (you can go up to 1 cup of your dried herbs if you are looking for a really strong cough drop)
2-3 teaspoons of cannabis tincture
¾ cup organic honey

Candy thermometer
Small but deep saucepan
Silicon scraper
Wax paper
Anti-stick powder of your choice

Method:

Let the herbs steep in a glass jar with the water for at least 20 minutes.

Squeeze the liquid from the herbs, strain the tea, and get rid of the water.

In a small saucepan, combine the herbal tea with the organic honey.

Place the candy thermometer on the side of the saucepan with its tip touching the liquid (but not the bottom). Get the mixture to a boil and continue stirring until it reaches 250F.

Add the cannabis tincture and continue stirring thoroughly. It will thicken, so you might need to tip the pan to the side to get a more accurate temperature reading. This procedure may take around half an hour, but it’s more important to watch the thermometer instead of watching the clock.

Be careful not to touch it, the boiling mixture can cause a painful burn if you get your skin on it or accidentally splatter some.
When the mixture finally reaches 300F, this is also called the hard drop stage, this is when you pour it into a cooling pan. Use the silicon scraper to effectively get everything out of the pan.

It’s critical to pour hot water on the sauce pan right away to get any remainders out. Using cold water will make the remainders turn hard right away, making cleanup a really tough task.

Let the mixture cool until you can confidently hold it without burning your skin – this takes anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes; it will depend on the temperature of the room you’re working in.

Spread a clean silicone sheet out, or some wax paper, then place some anti-stick powder. A little sugar, cocoa powder, or tapioca flour will do.

Use scissors to cut the mixture into long strips, then into drop-sized pieces, and place them on the powdered work surface area. Round the corners of the candy if you can.

Toss them a few pieces at a time into a jar containing ¼ cup of anti-stick powder. Shake it so that all the candies are covered in powder.

To store your homemade herbal cannabis cough drops, wrap them in wax paper but it’s critical that you should keep them in a cool place. This is because honey-based candies are prone to humidity. You can also add some more anti-stick powder when you store them in a container, but make sure they’re in a cool location.

Use your drops as needed to calm your coughs and soothe the throat.
