Kombucha.

You’ve probably already heard about kombucha before, unless you’ve been living under a rock. This special fermented tea has actually been around for thousands of years, even though it’s only risen in popularity in the last few years. In fact, kombucha came from the Far East more than 2,000 years ago even if you’ve only recently seen it in your local health stores recently.

Because of its fermented nature, kombucha is terrific for your gut and overall health. It’s rich in antioxidants and can kill harmful bacteria that may be lying dormant in your stomach. Its antioxidant content also mitigates the damage from free radicals and oxidative stress. Without antioxidant intake, free radicals can accumulate in the body and cause life-threatening conditions including cancer and atherosclerosis. This is why when you drink kombucha, you’re helping your body strengthen its immune system while fighting disease.

That’s not all; it’s also rich in probiotics. Kombucha is made with certain strains of bacteria mixed with some sugar and yeast in green or black tea. It’s then left to ferment for a few days. During the process of fermentation, the yeast and bacteria rise up to create a thin film on the liquid’s surface. This living blob is actually a colony of yeast and bacteria, known as SCOBY (Symbiotic Culture of Bacteria and Yeast), and this is used to make future batches of kombucha. Additionally, the fermentation process results in acetic acid and other acidic compounds, plus some gases and alcohol that contribute to its carbonation. A significant amount of probiotic bacteria is also produced while it’s fermenting. Aside from healthy probiotics, kombucha also contains enzymes and B vitamins.

Some of the many health benefits of kombucha include improved digestion, reduced inflammation, improved overall health, and weight loss. This is why many people consume kombucha and other types of probiotics religiously to keep the gut healthy.

Kombucha is so easy to make at home. You can add many other therapeutic and flavorful herbs into the mixture to get even more out of it.

Now, can you imagine how potent its therapeutic benefits will be when you mix it up with cannabis?

Yup, cannabis-infused kombucha is a real thing, and it’s so easy to make!

Here’s how.

Ingredients:

Quality SCOBY

10 cannabis-infused tea bags

1 gallon purified or distilled water

1 cup organic cane sugar

1 cup of premade kombucha (store-bought)

Jar covers

2-4 sterilized glass jars

1 quart juice of your choice (for flavoring)

Any herbs that you’d like

Process

The first thing to do is to brew the tea: do this by boiling your purified or distilled water. Add the cane sugar and mix well until the sugar dissolves completely. Next, add the cannabis tea, juice, and your herbs of choice; steep them in the hot water.

Let the mixture cool and reach room temperature. This is necessary to create an environment that will allow your SCOBY culture to thrive. Pour the brew into the sterilized glass jars, leaving around 2 inches of space on the top.

Distribute the premade kombucha into each jar, then add equal amounts of the SCOBY right after. Make sure to use clean hands. The SCOBY might have an off-putting smell, or you might also notice it float. However, it will change as it continues to grow during the fermentation process.

Cover each jar and make sure that it’s sealed well to prevent impurities or other contaminants from entering. Leave the jar in a dry, warm place in your home. The ideal temperature should be about 25C.

Allow the brew to ferment for around 10 days. You can test the kombucha’s flavor by carefully lifting the lid, inserting a straw but using one finger to cap one end of the straw, then sip from the other. Alternatively, you can use a clean dropper to test taste it. The taste of ready-to-drink kombucha should be semi-sweet with a hint of tartness.

Once the kombucha is ready, it can be poured into a larger jar but kept airtight.

There you have it: cannabis-infused kombucha, one of the healthiest beverages you can drink!
