Tips for Avoiding Fraudulent Medical Marijuana Schemes

Medical marijuana has helped many people all over the country find relief from pain or debilitating symptoms that other medication couldn’t help with. Although medical marijuana is not legal everywhere in the country, it has been gaining more and more support over the past few years.

Unfortunately, this higher demand for medical marijuana also means there is a higher chance for schemes and scams to appear. As more and more people try to take advantage of the growing demand for medical marijuana, some unethical people are bound to try and make a profit – and they’ll do it by convincing unassuming individuals to invest their money in a false company.

Let’s take a look at some tips that can help you avoid falling from one of these scams.

1. Know Where You’re Investing Your Money

Some scams surrounding medical marijuana don’t have much to do with the drug at all. Instead, scammers try to convince unsuspecting individuals to invest their money in the “next big thing.” They talk about how medical marijuana is about to take off and they can help turn a few hundred dollars into thousands of dollars.

Unfortunately, investors in these scams never see a penny again. Instead, investors take the cash and use it for their own personal use. If you’re going to invest your money in a medical marijuana company, be sure to do your research beforehand. Talk with professionals and do what you can to protect yourself.

2. Beware of a “Too Good to Be True” Situation

Scams can also come in the form of promises that don’t seem quite right. If a situation seems too good to be true or that it may actually be illegal, it’s best to avoid it all together. One example of this kind of behavior comes from Ohio.

Although Ohio has recently passed a law allowing for the use of medical marijuana, many scammers tried to convince patients they could get medical weed for them before Ohio dispensaries opened up. For a fee, patients could get a doctor’s note or Michigan medical marijuana card to purchase the drug in a nearby state. Unfortunately, both of these promises were scams.

Protect yourself by talking with a real medical marijuana doctor about your actual options for getting treatment.

3. Don’t Give Out Your Credit Card Information

In most situations, you wouldn’t think twice before paying for a product or service with a credit card. However, most credit card companies or big banks try to avoid the medical marijuana world because it is still a controversial subject. Because of this, most medical marijuana deals are done in cash.

If someone asks for the details of your credit card, this may be a sign of another scam. These scammers often promise cheap or even free medical marijuana when gathering your credit card information. When you give them your credit card info, they rack up fraudulent charges and hurt your credit score. If someone insists on getting your credit card information even when you offer to pay in cash, it’s probably a scam.

It’s always important to be aware of potential scams. If a situation doesn’t seem right, chance are there is a reason for that feeling. Listen to your gut and report any scam you come across.
