Top Trippy Books to Challenge the Status Quo – Stoner Edition
I’m assuming that you’re reading this post because you’ve been visited by one of humanities most dreaded feelings – boredom. You’ve probably spent a lot of time binging shows, which were fun for a bit, but now need something else.
Suddenly – you remembered there was this “thing” that people used to do way before the internet was even a thing…I think…they called it…reading? It involves a thing called…a book?
Yes, it’s quite a strange medium these days, but there are actually more books these days than ever before. This might make choosing reading material somewhat daunting. And so, in the hopes of someone else perhaps pointing you to the right direction – you clicked on this article and hoped that I – Reginald Reefer – is that “someone pointing you in some direction”.
Fine – I’ll give you some guidance on this matter. Unlike other “stoner book lists” – the books I’m picking isn’t necessarily about weed. I don’t believe that cannabis users are one-dimensional beings – meaning – I don’t think that cannabis users ONLY like weed. Nonetheless – I will include some cannabis-related reading material because after all – you can’t have a stoner reader list with no stoner reading material at all.
Here’s the
“Reginald Reefer Reading List for Evolved (and unevolved) Minds.”
Cannabis Related Reading Nook
We’ll first start off with cannabis-reading material. The first on the list has to be G.R.A.S.S by Jack Herer which should be considered “history”. If you don’t know who Jack Herer is – you need to read this book. And while you’re at it, read “The Emperor Wears No Clothes” by the same author.
Jack was one of the key figures that helped pave the way for cannabis legalization. If it wasn’t for his valiant efforts – who knows where cannabis would be today. We all owe this man a lot and at the very least – you could read his book to hear him speak in your mind’s ear for a bit.
If it wasn’t for Jack, the other titles within the cannabis repertoire wouldn’t matter.
Other Cannabis Books worth Exploring;
The Cannabis Manifestro – Steve DeAngelo
Green: A Field Guide to Marijuana by Dan Michaels & Erik Christiansen
How to Smoke Pot (properly) by David Bienenstock
Mind-Bending Literature
Now – let’s get into the literature that will influence the way you look at things.
One of my favorite books is written by Robert Anton Wilson entitled “Prometheus Rising”. While the book is slightly outdated and some of the predictions were off [by a few years] – the perspective this book will give you on the nature of your own reality is significant.
In fact, I would argue that everybody needs to learn some basic form of what is written in that book. If enough people were to learn the techniques discussed – the world would be transformed rather quickly.
Along with this book, it’s worth reading Chris Hyatt’s “Undoing Yourself through Energized Meditation”. It’s a book designed to break down pre-conceived notions you have – that you didn’t even choose. It will challenge your belief systems – but in the end, if you can get through it, you’ll experience the joys of being liberated from “mind-chains” keeping you down.
Other books within this avenue include;
13 Things that don’t make sense by Michael Brooks
Principia Discordia - Robert Anton Wilson
The Drunkard’s Walk – Leonard Mlodinow
Liber Null & Psychonaut – Peter J. Carroll
Fiction to Pass the Time and Challenge the Mind
Let’s talk about some escapism for a bit. For those who don’t want to challenge reality – but rather escape into a new one – this list is for you.
First – if you have not read this book – do so! Well – it’s two really. “A Wise Man’s Fear” and “The Name of the Wind” by Patrick Rothfuss is part of the “Kingkiller Chronicles” which is simply a masterpiece. The world you enter will blow you away. Little did I know – while writing this, the third book was also recently published – meaning that I have some new reading to do! I’m very excited about that.
Nonetheless – I believe that anyone that likes a bit of fantasy will find this story to be completely captivating and fairly “real” – at least in a symbolical astral type of way.
Other Books to get –
Neuromancer by William Gibson
US6 “The Lord’s Prayer” by Tom Ross
While Waiting – Jeandre Gerber
Conclusion
People say that “time is finite” and “when you lose time you can never get it back”. I disagree with this sentiment. I believe that while everything tends towards entropy – “time” is relative. Whenever you read a book – you are “adding time” to your life. In some cases – you can add lifetimes of experience and knowledge and cram it into a condensed time frame spent reading a book.
Instead of going mad with boredom – why not gain a few centuries in time during this forced time of reflection.
