The Best Cannabis Strains To Grow In Cold Climates

Growing your own cannabis in cold climates can be a little more challenging compared to tropical weather, but it isn’t impossible. Let’s admit it: not everyone is lucky enough to live in a place where the sun shines all day. In fact many cannabis growers have to make do with temperate climates and even have to deal with strong winds, rains, and cold temperatures.

Thankfully there are cannabis strains that will do well in these conditions. Here’s a list of some of the hardiest strains for cold climates:

white widow strain

  • White Widow: This legendary Dutch cannabis strain has consistently been a favorite, award winning strain throughout the decades. Given that it’s a Dutch variety, White Widow is hardier and can handle temperate weather especially those in Europe. White Widow is loved for the clear-headed buzz and the euphoric high it gives consumers. This strain was first bred in the Netherlands, but today growers from all over the world love it for its simple characteristics and consistently potent buzz. It can grow well both indoors and outdoors although it’s better to grow White Widow in a controlled indoor area. White Widow is pretty good when it comes to fighting off pests and diseases. White Widow can yield as much as 18 ounces in every square meter, with a flowering time of around 9 weeks. This strain is usually ready for harvest by the end of October.

blue cheese strain

  • Blue Cheese: A favorite for many reasons, Blue Cheese is distinctly known for its unique aroma. Originating in Europe, smoking Blue Cheese will give you a relaxed high without getting you too drowsy. It’s one of the most popular medical strains because it’s so useful in treating a wide variety of both physical and mental conditions. Blue Cheese is easy to grow and is extremely fragrant, and also is naturally resistant to mold. It actually prefers to grow in a cool environment, so you won’t have a hard time with Blue Cheese. This strain grows well in both indoor and outdoor settings and thrives in hydroponic as well as soil. Indoors, Blue Cheese can yield a strain of 18 ounces in every square meter. It takes 8 or 9 weeks to flower, harvesting by the end of September.

lsd cannabis strain

  • LSD: Many users love this strain because its high, to most, resemble that of the famous psychedelic it’s named after. It was originally created in the Netherlands and is now an award-winning hybrid. LSD delivers an upbeat high heavy on the indica side, although it’s pretty potent so users need to be careful about dosage. LSD is easy to cultivate because it’s naturally resistant to many common parasites and pests that affect cannabis plants. It also generally results in high yields and it grows short; ideal for cultivating both indoor and outdoor. One of the best things about LSD is that it isn’t as high maintenance as other strains. When grown indoors LSD can yield around 21 ounces per square meter; it takes around 10 weeks to flower. When grown in the outdoors it prefers sheltered areas so it can receive some sunshine. LSD is usually ready for harvest around mid-September.

durban poison strain

  • Durban Poison: Easily one of the most famous sativas, the clean high that Durban Poison delivers makes it a top choice for anyone looking for an uplifting and happy buzz. Durban Poison is 100% sativa and is an excellent strain for both medicinal and recreational use. Durban Poison prefers to be grown outside in sunny areas but it can still grow well in cool environments. This strain will thrive in a hydroponic environment if you grow it indoors, which is recommended if you live in a particularly cold climate. It can take around 9 weeks to grow and will yield an estimate of 13 ounces per square meter. Durban Poison is ready for harvesting by late September up to early October.

afgan kush strain

  • Afghan Kush: This famous indica is well-loved among users for the heavy body high it delivers. Afghan Kush is one of the best and purest indicas you can get your hands on if you are looking to get as relaxed as possible. This strain came from the Hindu Kush mountain range, and the seeds were developed in the Netherlands for easy growing. While Afghan Kush prefers balmy climates, it’s still pretty simple to grow and adaptable even to cool climes. It yields generously and is also resistant to parasites, pests, and molds.  If grown indoors it can take 7 or 8 weeks to flower, and can yield around 16 ounces per square meter.
