Traveling Internationally With Marijuana – Customs Finds Your Stash
How Do You Travel with Medical Cannabis? from CannabisNet on Vimeo.
Do you know what happens when you travel with medical marijuana? International travel can be tricky, so how can you best prepare yourself for getting caught at customs with some medical marijuana?
Montel Williams of 1990s TV fame, was recently detained in Germany for having a small amount of medical marijuana. Williams, who was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1999 has been a long time advocate of medical marijuana. Williams, now 60, says he presented the German immigration officials with his medical card, other doctor's notes proving his condition, and was released with his stash within the hour.
Williams had nothing but accolades for the German officials and said he was treated very well.
Does that mean that all countries will be as forgiving as Germany? Did being a TV celebrity have anything to do with his treatment?
Some things we did learn from Montel’s experience is that if you are forced to travel with your medical marijuana, remember to bring a few things with you.
First, make sure you have your medical marijuana card, no matter where it is from or from whatever state you have it from.
Second, make sure medical marijuana is in the prescription container it was issued in, with full medical markings and showing your name as the patient on the bottle.
Third, try to bring a doctor’s note explaining your condition and why you use marijuana. The more paperwork you have, the more legit your case will seem to a customs official.
Fourth, find out the rules and regulations around cannabis in the country you are traveling to. Views on the plant vary greatly from Middle East countries compared to a country like Holland or Canada. The punishments will be greatly different if you guess wrong.
Now, the Germans showed compassion for Montel’s case and did a very humane thing. Would I want to try this at the Dubai airport or the Philippine’s with their new drug czar president? No way, not yet.
Did being a celebrity help his case? Probably, but we will never know. When they questioned him and found out who he is, or maybe he laid the “google me” on them, did it help to show 4,000,000 google results and TV shows? Probably.
Either way, travel from state to state is risky within the USA with medical marijauna and traveling internationally with medical marijuana is even more risky.
