CBD Oil vs. Medical Marijuana: How CBD Oil is Different

If there is one subject in the medical world that has dominated the past couple of years it is the emergence of CBD oil as a viable – and legal – substance for pain relief and many other uses. What is CBD oil, and why is there a whole load of controversy surrounding it? We’ll give you the low down in a moment, but it’s worth knowing that much of the controversy is misguided. Why is this? Well, it’s due to the association between CBD Oil and marijuana, which we are here to talk about. Before we get into things further, let’s have a look at what CBD oil is, and then we’ll talk about Medical Marijuana.

What is CBD Oil?

CBD is short for Cannabidiol; this is one of more than 100 chemical substances that are found in the cannabis plant. This is where the confusion begins, and the controversy, so read on and we will explain.

Many of the substances in cannabis have medicinal properties. CBD is one of them, and it is extracted and mixed with a ‘carrier’ – sometimes hemp or coconut oil – to create the oil that is used for medicinal purposes.

Of course, we all know that cannabis gets you ‘high’, so that follows that CBD oil is also going to do the same, right? Wrong! The element in cannabis that causes the psychoactive reaction is known as THC; this is another of the 100 and more chemicals in the plant. CBD Oil contains no traces of THC, and not enough to get you high.

Now that’s cleared up, let’s have a look at things a little further. CBD oil is legal in all 50 states of the USA with certain provisions: it must be produced from ‘industrial hemp’, or it must be made from hemp in Europe and imported.

What is it used for? Research into the benefits of CBD oil (and also the benefits of other compounds in the cannabis plant) are ongoing, but it has already been found to be useful for (although be aware it is not certified for use by the relevant authorities in some areas) and perfectly safe in the relief of pain, in helping you relax, in aiding sleep and so on. Sufferers from anxiety and depression have also reported benefits, and it is used by people with chronic pain such as sciatica to notable effect. Once again, CBD oil is natural, and perfectly safe.

Now, let’s talk about ‘Medical Marijuana’, and how it differs to CBD oil.

What is Medical Marijuana?

The confusion and controversy surrounding CBD oil is further exaggerated by the use of Medical Marijuana in some cases, so what is the difference?

We’ve described what CBD oil is in detail above, so let’s do the same here. Medical marijuana is a similar product to CBD oil, and uses cannabinoids too, but there is a major difference: as we have said, CBD oil must be produced from hemp. Medical marijuana is the product of the marijuana plant.

Now, the difference is interesting: whereas the traces of THC – remember we mentioned THC, it’s the psychoactive element in the cannabis plant – in CBD oil amount to nothing, they are present in medical marijuana, which is harvested in a different way.

This means that the latter – the marijuana element – can have a stronger effect in terms of how you react. Furthermore, medical marijuana is usually smoked – as per standard marijuana – which is not to everyone’s taste. CBD oil, on the other hand, is available in many different forms for ingestion as you will find if you visit CBD Oil Geek which is an authoritative site concentrating on the benefits, uses and further information about CBD oil.

Which is Best?

This is a question that depends upon who you are, and where you are, as the legality of medical marijuana is not as clear cut as that of CDB Oil. Also, the difference in results may mean you need one rather than the other – if you are prescribed medical marijuana by your doctor, for example, then that is the substance you should use.

However, there is no doubt at all that CBD oil is the more sensible product, and the more readily available, as you can buy it online or in some shops on the high street. You can also get CBD oil to take in liquid form, in the shape of jelly sweets, and in many more easy to use formats, rather than having to smoke it.

With research ongoing into the effects and benefits of CBD oil, and many users reporting it to be a very effective substance in pain relief and more, it is something you should consider if your current medication is not effective, so read more at CBD Oil Geek and see if this is the answer for you.
