The Benefits Of Trading Your Wine Nightcap For Cannabis Instead

Humans have been consuming alcohol, liquor, and spirits in many forms for centuries now. Booze has become such a staple for society, and we continue to consume it for many reasons that primarily have to do with relaxation. This is why alcohol is so popular for unwinding after work, get-togethers, weekends, celebrations, and even before bed.

It’s because alcohol is seen as a relaxant, something that effectively takes the edge off after a stressful day. However, that alcoholic nightcap that you’re having, even if it’s just a glass of wine, isn’t all that healthy. Whether you’re a light, moderate, or heavy drinker, alcohol has been shown to cause cancer.  You may have also noticed that your seemingly harmless nightcap may cause you to feel lethargic and tired the next day.

Why not switch up your nightcap for something herbal, instead? As cannabis becomes mainstream, people are discovering the benefits of the plant and realize that aside from its efficacy in treating many diseases, it’s also a healthier and safer substitute to alcohol. The statistics are in, too. A survey by Eaze revealed that 82% of customers have lessened their drinking because of cannabis, while 11% of them have quit altogether. This is especially important for seniors and Gen Xers who rely on a boozy nightcap: the number of deaths resulting from alcohol or drug poisoning is much higher among those aged 50 to 69 years old.

No matter how old you are, making the switch to a herbal nightcap can bring about a world of health benefits.

Why Cannabis Is A Healthier, Safer Nightcap

Cannabis contains cannabinoids, primarily the non-psychoactive cannabidiol (CBD), and psychoactive tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), among a few hundred others. These compounds work by attaching themselves to the receptors found throughout your body. On the other hand, endocannabinoids, which are produced by your body, bind to these receptors too.

When you consume cannabis, the cannabinoids have an impact on virtually every system in your body. This is because of the endocannabinoid system, which regulates a great deal of functions within you including relaxation as well as your pain response, heart health, mood regulation, and immune system.

Additionally, the cannabinoids in cannabis also affect the pleasure and reward pathways in your brain that affect your feelings of euphoria and anxiety. This is pretty much how alcohol works in the brain too, but unlike cannabis, the human body doesn’t have its own natural receptors for ethanol. But alcohol also affects two primary neurotransmitters in the brain: GABA, which is a calming chemical which reduces energy levels; and glutamate, a neurotransmitter that stimulates the production of adrenalin and other chemicals that get your energy levels up. Cannabis can also work on these neurotransmitters but it does so through our naturally-occurring cannabinoid receptors.

In short, when you switch wine for cannabis, you get all the same good and relaxing feelings that you’re after. Although cannabis isn’t harmful, nor will it give you a nasty feeling the morning after. The opposite is true, in fact – you’ll probably wake up feeling much more well-rested. That’s because alcohol has been scientifically proven to reduce sleep quality. It does help you fall asleep faster because it is a depressant after all, but it will give you terrible sleep on the very same night.

How To Make The Switch

Using cannabis to replace your boozy nightcap will be one of the best things you can do for your health. Best of all, doing so is really easy thanks to the wide variety of deliciously flavored cannabis in many forms: flower, vape, edibles, beverages, and tinctures among others. A puff or two from a tasty vape pen can impart the same relaxing benefits as a glass of wine. You can also choose to consume CBD products as opposed to those with THC if you don’t want to get high, or keep it at a minimum. For a nice balance, there are also cannabis products in the market that offer a range of CBD:THC ratios to suit your personal preferences.

Just like different varieties of wine can affect you differently, so can different strains of cannabis. The best varieties to experiment with before bed to replace a glass of wine would be the calming, relaxing indicas, or a well-balanced hybrid. Just be sure to avoid the uplifting sativas because these are energizing and best consumed during the day.
