Aquaponic Cannabis Mushroom Farm a-la-Dutch Bucket! - Ganja Theories
A while back, I wrote about the potential of combining a cannabis grow room with mushroom cultivation in order to create a natural CO2 boost. Back then – it was all theoretical and I’m happy to tell you that it is no longer theoretical but verifiable. You simply have to vent out during the “fruiting” period of the mycelium to not have any contaminants transfer into other rooms.
However – I’ve been “riding a current” of thoughts on how to become a more self-sustainable human being. This “great pause” as some call it made me see just how dependent I am on so many things including food, medicine, energy, and a whole host of other things.
Romantically – I’d pack up my things, downgrade my possessions and go to some remote part of the world to create a “rural-self-sustainable” habitat to live in. Personally, I’m not willing to go “Full Hermit” just yet.
This made me think about how I could become “as self-sustainable as I can be” while being connected to the grid. How can I convert my home (or apartment or wherever you may live) into a place that serves more than “just a place to eat-shit-sleep”. Can I convert my living space into a producer? How much food or medicine could I produce in a limited space? Can I use solar or other means to power it?
You get the picture…
This finally brought me to a system that I think is very possible even within an urban setting. It’s important to note that when you’re creating “integrated systems” – you’d be losing out on some of the advantages of single-crop grows.
However, with a large enough space – you can easily grow all the food and medicine you would need.
The Aquaponic Cannabis Mushroom Farm
To make this system work – we have all the resources available right here on Cannabis.net. The only major difference between the hydroponic systems I have written about previously is that this will be utilizing an Aquaponic component.
For those who don’t know what aquaponics is, it’s a system of aquaculture in which the waste produced by farmed fish or other aquatic animals supplies nutrients for plants grown hydroponically, which in turn purify the water.
If you have edible fish – you’ve got a great source of protein and your food source would also be supplying the nitrogen-rich/mineralized water for your cannabis plants. There are plenty of different “types of aquaponics systems” and so I decided to rather point you in the right direction as opposed to trying to explain them all to you.
Rob Bob’s Aquaponics & Backyard is more than capable of explaining to you the inner-workings of various aquaponics configurations.
At the end of the video I linked above – Rob talks about a “Dual-Loop System” which was the configuration I figured would work best for growing cannabis. Except, instead of a “flatbed” hydroponic layout, to rather use a “Dutch Bucket” system.
The Dutch Bucket system creates interconnected “nodes” where you can grow your plants. However – when you’re growing in a Dutch Bucket system, you can use the “space between plants” to grow herbs and other smaller plants – giving you more “plant per square foot”.
The only added component to all of this would be to grow mushrooms [both edible and psychedelic] in an enclosed room with an air duct feeding into your grow room for additional CO2. Growing mushrooms is far simple than you could ever imagine – CLICK HERE TO GO DOWN THAT RABBIT HOLE – in fact, you could even couple mushroom cultivation with microgreens, incorporate it all into one system. Getting Alternative Energy Sources
Ideally, you’ll want to disconnect your “life support system” from the grid. The grid – though it may be convenient and easy, can fail. And when it does, your entire system will go to shit. Your fish might die, your plants might wilt and everything can go bad very quickly.
Unless – you go the extra step and create your own energy system. There are hundreds of videos on Youtube that explore solar, wind, magnets…you name it.
THIS VIDEO HERE shows you how complicated these systems can become. I am currently consuming this and seeing “how can I make this viable within an urban setting?”
Why go “Off Grid” while on the grid?
I don’t think it is necessary to become “extremely off-grid”. I think that it makes sense to build a “life support system” that can sustain you – irrespective of what’s happening on the grid – is a smart idea.
I believe we have become so dependent on everything society throws at us and that we have all the technology available to us to not only build these complex and intricate systems – BUT AUTOMATE IT!
Of course, it will cost money, effort, and you’ll probably fuck up more times than you can count – however, the moment you get it running, producing all the food & medicine you need – you’ll know it’s totally worth it.
I don’t know about you – but that is something that interests me.
