Legalized Cannabis for Post-Covid Economy Damage Control?

Irrespective of whether you believe we’re in a global viral pandemic, or whether “they” are doing some globalists move, or we’re in the end of days – the facts remain the same. The world is currently on hold and as a result – we’re inching closer to an economic depression of epic proportions.

In fact – some experts believe that this might be worse for the economy than the Great Depression. At least, this was the sentiment of the International Monetary Fund in a blog titled – “The Great Lockdown: Worst Economic Downturn Since the Great Depression”

“It took three and a half years, from August of 1929 to March of 1933, to go from robust full employment to the depths of the Great Depression. It looks like we’re going to get there in less than three and a half months”, according to Lawrence White – an economics professor at NY University.

Other experts believe that Covid-19 will push nearly a half a billion people into “extreme poverty”. One of these

"The economic crisis is potentially going to be even more severe than the health crisis," said Mr Hoy. Christopher Hoy is one of the researchers at The Australian National University.

"COVID-19 will push tens of millions of people back into extreme poverty and they will not be able to meet their basic needs” - SOURCE

As extreme poverty increases – so does mortality rates, infectious diseases, crime, slavery, sex/child trafficking, and much more.

All of this is a “potential future scenario”. These are merely speculations, albeit with some supporting data. However – nobody knows exactly how the future is going to play out yet if we base it on past-trends; it does seem that there is definitely an economic recession in our near future, and potentially an economic depression.

Now that we have established the potential future problem – let’s start talking about the potential future solution.

HEMP/CANNABIS TO SAVE EARTH

It’s a phrase claimed by advocates for decades now and currently it seems more prophetic every day. The San Francisco Examiner recently wrote an article entitled; “We Must End Marijuana Prohibition For Economic Recovery in a Post Pandemic World.” [Read it here]

The article goes into the potential scenarios of a “Legalized World” post Covid-19. It discusses potential job revenue, and so forth – but I’d like to go a step further.

Hemp – fortunately, is already legal in the US and in many other places. However, the commerce of hemp is not what it could be. Hemp is a crop that was touted to be – at one point in history – America’s first $1 Billion Dollar Crop [way back in 1937]. If $100 in 1937 is worth roughly $1800 USD in 2020 – you can do the math.

This is hemp alone – however, we have seen that cannabis is already capable of producing billions per year – meaning, we already have a model to see that cannabis not only creates jobs – but also helps the economy.

In a Post Covid-19 world – we will be sitting with millions of people out of work, extreme poverty increasing which will inevitably lead to a slew of other social ills. Would fully embracing cannabis and hemp have the ability to mitigate the problem?

I would say so. At the very least – cannabis and hemp provides alternative sources of income at a large scale. This means that there is an industry that is ready to be activated and take up a larger portion of supplying people with a revenue stream. In  fact, the cannabis industry can be divided into three sub-divisions, which would all are worth billions of dollars on their own.

Medical

Recreational

Industrial

It would make sense for the US to completely embrace legal cannabis in response to the job loss due to the shutdown. The Great Pause – at this point – will generate more deaths due to economic loss than to the virus itself. Poverty also increases crime, which would then result in increased police presence, deeper clash between people and the state and a few decades of moderate mayhem.

Unless of course – we stop being childish about drug use in general – end our silly war on freedom of choice and embrace new sources of income.

I believe – post COVID-19 there will be several new business avenues opening up. We’ll see plenty of “get rich quick schemes” that will steal the money from the already disenfranchised at the same time we’ll see legitimate income sources appear.

Irrespective of what you think of the current situation – the smart folk are gearing up to for the future and figuring out how they will survive in a Post COVID-19 world. My only hope is that this breaks the prohibition model completely and will allow Americans and the world to re-define our relationship with cannabis in an official capacity.
