This has led to an upsurge in the number of various sources of nutrients available for boosting plant growth and yield ranging from the commercially produced ones to the food waste items and other organic nutrients like seaweed.

The use of seaweed as a natural form of nutrient for cannabis growth has been on the rise recently even though it has been adopted for agricultural practices for centuries. Kelp is another form of seaweed that can be found almost all over the world with different names as it has over 23 different species. There is the Rockweed, Gulfweed, Giant Kelp, Norwegian kelp among others which are harvested in large quantities for commercial purposes. It is usually gotten from shallow and nutrient-rich waters and said to be highly beneficial as it contains over 60 trace elements and almost all the nutrients several plants including cannabis need for a healthy growth which is why it is often referred to as a nutrition powerhouse.

Benefits of Seaweed

Seaweed in its various forms has been used for centuries in aiding the growth and development of plants as it contains several nutrients. For example, fresh seaweed contains calcium, magnesium, boron, sulfur and a host of numerous macro and micronutrients it has absorbed from the ocean. Also, when integrated into a meal, it is known to contain vitamins A, E, B12, C and K in addition to other substances that help in the accelerated development of the plant while regulating its growth.

Furthermore, seaweed helps in moisture retention in the soil thus reducing your watering cycle while still encouraging beneficial bacteria which help the plant break down organic matter and get essential nutrients. It also serves as a defense mechanism against fungi, bacteria, and viruses by producing certain compounds that are effective against them. Applying seaweed to your plant guarantees protection from pests, weeds, and other intrusive plants by covering the soil and blocking any new growth from sprouting while regulating the soil pH. It also promotes plant metabolism by augmenting the soil with trace elements while making its texture lighter for easy access to nutrients and root formation.

Using Seaweed

There are various forms of seaweed which can also be used in different forms in cannabis cultivation to help the plant grow. These forms include mulch to be placed on your soil, compost and liquid fertilizer to spray on your plants to boost development and protect from diseases.

Mulching

Applying seaweed directly to the soil when planting allows it to decompose and break down into microorganisms for effective use.

Composting

Seaweed is a suitable ingredient to be added to your compost bin due to its several nutritional benefits. Thus, mixing it in with several other beneficial materials can guarantee the best nutrients for your plants

Liquid Fertilizer

This is quite easy to make as all that is required of you is to mix seaweed with other compost material and some water and leave it for a while to break down properly. One needs to be very careful when applying it to the plant and use little as it is highly concentrated.

To ensure optimum results when using seaweed on the plant, it can first be used on the soil in a meal form or as root dip before being applied as a foliar spray on the growing plant. This will ensure growth in two forms, significant root growth and increased cell division and elongation of the plant. Sustaining the flow of nutrients to your plants is quite important as it ensures its proper growth and protects it from defects and deficiency which will in turn not only slow the cannabis plant's growth but also affect your overall yield.
