Nitrogen is responsible for several important functions particularly serving a plant’s metabolism, and helps manufacture chlorophyll. However, it isn’t very easy for cannabis plants to absorb nitrogen. It needs to be present in the right condition and form in order to be absorbed by the roots.

With normal conditions, though, cannabis plants can efficiently absorb nitrogen. But it’s particularly helpful during its growing stages, or if the cannabis plant is under severe stress. Nitrogen deficiencies are manifested by yellowing of the leaves, or growth shoots found between veins. In the case of a serious nitrogen deficiency, both smaller veins and older leaves turn yellow.

Rabbit Poop is #1

Out of all the animal manures being used as garden fertilizers, rabbit poop is the best source of nitrogen among all. Mixing some rabbit manure into the soil of your cannabis plants results in tremendous benefits by improving the structure of the soil in order to make it more efficient in holding water. It also helps make clay more loamy due to the addition of organic matter.

Additionally, rabbit poop also contributes vital nutrients for healthy cannabis plant growth.

To use rabbit poop, just top-dress your garden with it, or work it into the soil before you plant cannabis. As a general rule of thumb, use 2.5 to 10 pounds of fresh manure for every 10 square feet of soil. How much rabbit manure you add will depend on the quality of the soil.

If you decide to leave some manure on top of the soil, be sure to cover it with 4 inches of organic mulch. Some great examples of organic mulch include grass clippings, dry leaves, or hay. This will prevent nutrient run off during the rainy weather.

Another way to make use of it is by soaking the rabbit manure in water for 48 hours, then apply it on the soil as a diluted liquid fertilizer.

Because rabbit poop is so rich in nitrogen already, it’s best to use it sparingly.

Cow Poop

Poop from dairy cows is also a great source of nitrogen, especially when used fresh. All you need to do is spread a thin layer on top of the soil, then work it in by tilling. If you need more nitrogen from cow poop, it’s best to use steer manure, which is manure taken from cows that have been raised for their beef. This is because cows raised for beef are cared for in such a way that enables them to produce more nitrogen in their manure, though it should be composed prior to use.

Horse Poop

Horse manure has a slightly richer nitrogen content compared to cows. This is why it’s best to compost them before using it in your cannabis grow. Weeds tend to grow in fresh horse manure, though a compost pile generates heat and makes it harder for weeds to sprout. Now if weeds aren’t an issue for you, then by all means you can till it in freshly then allow it to decompose for around a month before you plant cannabis.

Goat, Alpaca, and Llama Poop

Unlike the previous types of poop mentioned, the manure of goats, alpacas, and llamas come out in the form of hard pellets. These pellets are so nitrogen rich, but they require composting or aging before you till them into the soil.

These types of animal manure are usually collected with straw or other bedding material which is a source of carbon that is used to balance out its nitrogen levels. It’s also good to note that these animals’ beddings already make a great compost pile without much work from you.

Pig Poop

Pig poop is the least valuable type of animal manure used for its nitrogen content. But if you mix it with straw using a 1:1 ratio, you can make yourself a balanced compost. Take note that pig poop has high pH levels: it is also used to neutralize acidic soils.
