As we’re rounding up the insanity that is 2021, I have decided to bless my readers with some choice entertainment. As usually with these lists – all of the content provided here is purely based on things I like to watch.
Fortunately for everyone reading – I have impeccable taste. My wife and I often play a game of “who can find the better content” to consume and I have been consistently winning for a few years. My wife definitely finds some awesome content, however – I know how to find things that simply stick with you for years.
Therefore, if you’re looking for your next digital obsession, toke up and stick around to find out my top choice for binge-worthy content to smoke to.
Arcane (Netflix)
This is probably the best adaptation from a game to a show. Arcane comes from the world of League of Legends and has some of the best animation I have seen in a long time. It almost feels like you’re watching a piece of art unfold. Then, you’ve got killer plotlines, amazing characters and rich lore to pull from.
League of Legends as a game is one of the best online games with a player base of about 100-120 million. With the show, I’m sure that this will grow some more. I specifically don’t play League of Legends simply because it’s too addictive – but if you like smoking weed and playing games – this show will definitely be up your ally.
The last episode of the season lingered with me for days. I won’t spoil it for you!
Bebop Cowboy (Netflix)
This live action adaptation from the popular show in the 90s hit hard. It’s been a while since I could simply sit back and watch a show like that from beginning to end. Everything about the show is amazing. The fight sequences rock, the world feels like “the future” as imagined by someone in the 1970s and has that weird cross-over between a western and a Kung Fu movie.
The actors create deep and engaging characters and the underlying backstory really takes a great twist at the end. Unlike most shows, don’t expect a happy ending at the end of this thrill ride. If you haven’t seen this remake of a classic – it’s highly recommended.
Marvel’s What if (Disney)
I was somewhat going through “super hero fatigue” until What If showed up. This alternative view on the MCU gives you a fresh new look at old characters. The animation is something that certainly is a major selling point on this, however – if you’re not that “into” the super hero thing, this may not be for you.
Nonetheless, it was a very good show with compelling storytelling and some real “deep moments” that shocks you. More importantly, the same actors who play the characters in the movies voiced the cartoon – making the transition into the alternative universe a seamless transition.
Brand New Cherry Flavor (Netflix)
What can I say but “Bravo!” If you haven’t seen this masterpiece, I strongly recommend that you do. Not only does it contain one of the “realest” scenes of assault I have seen in a TV show, it also allows you to peak into the power dynamics of the Hollywood elite.
If you like magic – then this dark “dramedy” will definitely be up your ally. I can’t really get into more of the plot without revealing too much but let me leave you with this – “the protagonist frequently vomits cats…” that should be more than enough to peak your interest.
Ted Lasso Season 2 (Apple)
If you want to feel good, Ted Lasso will get you there. It’s about an American football coach coaching Soccer in the UK – the plot is light yet littered with some real deep moments. If you haven’t seen a single episode of the series, simply go ahead and give yourself the permission to feel good for a moment.
We all need a bit more Ted Lasso in our lives, especially with all the divisive politics fucking up the world around us.
Mythic Quest (Apple)
Another binge-worthy show, Mythic Quest is about a game studio and the antics that happen within the corporate walls. Inflated Egos, fragile self images and Mac from “It’s always Sunny in Philadelphia” and you’ve got yourself a killer piece of entertainment. It’s a fast paced comedy with one of the best “Covid” episodes I have seen. If you haven’t seen that episode, check it out – it’s fantastic.
What about movies?
As for movies, I have recently checked out Dune by Villanueva and it’s a fantastic piece of art. It’s as if Game of Thrones made its way into space. Dune has always been somewhat of a cultural phenomenon, and Villanueva has certainly done the movie justice. Sure, it’s more than two hours of play time and is only setting up the stage for a greater conflict – I for one found it absolutely fascinating.
Other movies you can check out include;
Nobody
If you haven’t seen Nobody, do yourself a favor and do so. It’s a completely different take on the action genre and when you see “Better Call Saul” unleash all living hell on folks – you buy it. I didn’t think that Odenkirk could pull off the type of action, but he did just that.
It has that “Kick Ass” feel to it and it’s fantastic. I’ll definitely give it a re-watch soon.
Did I miss anything?
If you find yourself wanting to distract yourself for a sting, get baked and enjoy some good entertainment – this list should be more than enough to give you a few weeks of uninterrupted viewing. Of course, this is just a few things I saw.
I’m still going to be checking out the Nicolas Cage movie “Pig” which I have heard had some great reviews. Let me know what else there is to watch, if it’s anything like the content I listed, I’m sure I’ll like it too.
