What are the main reasons why people are against weed?
Some of you may think – “how can anyone be against weed…that’s ridiculous!” and yes my friends, you’re right. It is ridiculous. However, there are ridiculous people on this planet and in most cases, they are convinced that YOU are the imbecile.
What prompted me to write this article? I saw this tweet:
Why do you think ppl are against cannabis/pot/marijuana/weed whatever you call it?...
— Stonah (@yoonmi420) August 18, 2020
Then I realized that there are probably many people out there who don’t understand the motivation behind the opposition of…anything really. When it comes to cannabis the motivation of hate or opposition is difficult to pinpoint. Since there are so many different perspectives on the plant, summing them up in an article is probably the best way of answering the question thoroughly. Twitter simply fails to provide enough charters to do it justice.
What does Bullshit and Belief Systems [B.S] have in common?
To be in opposition of “something” you first have to establish a belief in “something-else”. For example, If you believe in God then it would be safe to assume that you’d be “against” the Devil or the “anti-God”.
Some of you may scoff at the idea of “God” while simultaneously believing that something can happen from nothing. Yes – evolution motherfuckers. All of these – some potentially more coherent than others – are still simply belief systems.
If you hammer long enough on any idea – eventually you’ll run into areas that require “belief” or “assumptions” to justify the “facts”. The reason for these ‘educated assumptions’ is because if we were forced to absolutely prove something to be true – we would never make any progress in life.
We make educated guesses on many of our hardcore sciences and believe it will work. Sometimes it does – and then sometimes it doesn’t. And then sometimes “it” does something we never expected “it” to do.
So what does ALL OF THIS have to do with people “hating on pot”? Simple – their hate is intrinsically connected to their belief systems. These belief systems find the idea of “consuming narcotics” as not-viable and thereby not-compatible/tolerated within their space.
This of course requires that some of us – consumers – need to pay the price with heavy penalties like you know….life in prison and all that jazz. Because you know – you’re a dirty scum-sucking hippie-communist-leach that deserves to be punished for how shitty of a human being you are.
It all makes sense [under their framing of reality].
For many of the people who subscribe to this idea – these responses or justifications happen on automatic. Prohibition or any stringent idea about anything runs like an automated program keeping the “system operational”.
Many people are simply running a “Prohibition Based Operating System” where cannabis and associated ideas are like “viruses” to the OS.
This is because the acceptance of the concept of Cannabis conflicts with several other associated programs. The original Tweet asked “Why are people against weed” – it’s these associated programs that typically are their justification for prohibition.
Associated [B.S] that supports Prohibition
Conflicting Values – Cannabis prohibition utilized the puritanical views of the white majority in the early 1900s to convince them to vote against cannabis. These puritanical views included the skewed message of Christian values guised under the mantle of “purity”. “No alcohol shall touch these lips” extended out to other substances as well such as opium and eventually marijuana. Let’s not forget the vile racial justifications conducted in the name of “God Almighty”. While today the version of Christianity preaches peace and inclusion – back then the Bible was a sword that helped justify atrocious acts. Remnants of these beliefs about “puritanical living” is one belief system that conflicts with smoking weed.
Political Blindness – Politicians loved prohibition until it wasn’t popular anymore. These days you have many senators and congress people speaking up for cannabis – but 20 years ago none of them would have said shit. This is because “Tough on Crime” was the Mantra of the 1990s to 2000s. Hell – the War on Drugs was sporting a major erection due to their inflated budget and unprecedented ability to violate constitutional rights. You know stuff like “prosecuting your house or your car” when you have done no crime or drug courts, locking people up for 3-strikes like it’s some sort of game and a whole lot of other shitfuckery. Some people are simply so entrenched in their political views that reason can never penetrate those blinders.
Willful Ignorance – In this day and age, if you’re still 100% against weed you’re either trolling or willfully ignorant – which could be the same thing if you come to think about it. There’s ample evidence that cannabis has therapeutic value, it’s relatively safe compared to beer and tobacco, and has had largely positive results since legalization. If you’re against it – WTF is wrong with you?
Believers of the Myth – The final group are the acolytes of prohibition. These are the ones who worship the idea that prohibition is the ONLY WAY we can RID THE WORLD OF DRUGS. I mean c’mon – doesn’t that just sound like religious mumbo-jumbo? The believers of the myth drank the cool-aid. They remember that “Weed kills brain cells” and “Makes you a criminal” or a “whore” or fat, lazy, a social outcast, probably living in the basement of your parents…etc. These are people who decided that critical thinking is a tad bit too hard and that they would prefer reality through a “paint-by-numbers” approach.
Beneficiaries of Prohibition – the final class of belief system is that of the opportunists. Police unions, prisons, drug rehabilitation, big pharma [competing drug companies], etc – there’s a bunch of industries that stand to lose a lot of money if cannabis is fully-commercially available. Perhaps this group of people are shrinking due to their unpopularity in today’s social climate – or like Boehner are jumping ship. These people should be prosecuted for crimes against humanity – but they are the ones who help make your laws so I guess we’re all kind of fucked on that one.
Well – there you have it, some of the major pillars of belief surrounding the mentality of a prohibitionist. Who did I miss?
