Top Arguments to Win a Cannabis Debate With an Anti-Pot Person
You’d think that by now people are all on board with cannabis legalization. The vast majority of people are on board, but every now and then you’ll run into someone who is either still on the fence or staunchly opposed to the idea.
If you find yourself in a situation where you are forced to fight back in the name of cannabis, today we’ll be walking through some of the most compelling arguments in favor of legal cannabis.
These arguments have been formulated through years of cannabis advocacy and has worked on convincing even the most entrenched critics of cannabis.
Let’s see what they are all about.
Cannabis is a personal choice
Probably the biggest argument in favor of legal cannabis comes down to the autonomy of your own body and mind. If you are an adult, with the legal right to own guns, drive cars, drink alcohol and die in a war on foreign soil…you should have the right to choose what goes into your body.
Not only is cannabis safer than alcohol and tobacco, it can provide medical relief to people. To not have the ability to choose whether you want to consume cannabis or not, is a gross violation of your sovereignty.
You’re not arguing to legalize it for consumption in kids. This is important to establish when debating. You are arguing in favor of adults having the right to choose what they put in their own bodies as long as it doesn’t hurt anyone else. If someone opposes you on these issues, you can point out that they are not in favor of “personal freedom” and are in favor of being “controlled by the state”.
They might try to side-step the argument by saying, “Well, does that mean that you support people taking heroin?” You could respond by saying, “Cannabis is one of the safest (if not the safest) recreational drugs on the planet, to compare heroin to cannabis is like comparing a fully-automatic rifle to a water pistol.” It’s simply not comparable.
Cannabis provides medical relief
If the personal choice argument doesn’t go over very well, you could also argue that cannabis does provide medical relief. There are plenty of studies you could point to as well as to reiterate your argument.
Additionally, you can mention that the FDA approved Epidiolex, meaning that cannabinoids like CBD holds medical value which is approved by a federal agency.
“That’s CBD, not THC”, they might respond. Where you say, “Sativex is synthetic THC which is also approved by the FDA…” Check-Mate.
A Regulated Market is Safer than the Black Market
Another well-thought out argument deals with black market vs regulation. Under the black market there are no age restrictions, no quality control and all the funds are diverted into the black market.
The regulated market places age restrictions, quality control and funds are diverted into the pockets of the state, which is then used to fund programs for school, rehabilitation and even fixing infrastructure.
You can ask them, “would you rather have rogue vendors running around, with no respect to law or age selling weed…or have it in a legitimate store where it’s impossible for minors to get into?”
Odds are they’d say, “Neither”, but then you can say…”Neither isn’t an option because the black market is currently alive and thriving…”
Prohibition has failed…how much longer until we do something different?
Another stellar argument you can point out is that prohibition has never worked. It didn’t work for alcohol; it doesn’t work for drugs.
Prohibition, in fact makes drugs more dangerous and inflates the black market. There has been a war on drugs since 1971, and we have not seen a decrease in use or supply. In fact, the opposite is true. Under prohibition we have seen a greater increase in use and supply.
For the past 58 years we have been trying to do it this way, yet we only have larger-more-dangerous drug cartels as a result and made no dent in consumption.
The idea of a “Drug Free Society” is a fallacy. An unattainable pipe-dream.
Jobs and the Economy
By 2022, the cannabis industry is poised to generate more than a half a million jobs. This means more tax revenue, more economical stability and a new revenue source.
Why would you deny jobs and revenue from the people simply because you don’t like pot?
Racist Roots
Finally, you can point out that marijuana prohibition is founded on racism. From Anslinger to Nixon, racism has always been at the core of prohibition. The only question you need to ask on this point is, “Why are you supporting an idea that is based in racism? Why sustain a policy that was meant to oppress minorities?”
Usually by this point, they have run out of arguments.
Conclusion
Even though you’ll run into fewer people who oppose cannabis, there are still many who are not in favor of legalization or consumption at all. These are generally purists who believe that “people shouldn’t take drugs”.
This all the while they sip on coffee or eat some chocolate. Sugar is one of the most addictive legal drugs on the planet and it’s in virtually everything. Purists are nothing more than hypocrites and knowing how to deal with them is key.
