All it takes is one toke - When Cannabis is no longer taboo
It is almost palpable the paradigm shift towards cannabis. People no longer view the topic as taboo. Not so long ago, anything related with marijuana would be strictly spoken with a hush-hush approach, however these days everyone and their aunt are toking up.
It didn’t happen overnight. There was a lot of work done in the shadows. A lot of people had to re-educate the masses who have been negatively programmed for decades. It wasn’t easy to convince people that your “safety” is not more important than your freedom.
Irrational fears were streamed into the subconscious of everyone, including me at one point. However, it only took a few puffs of this righteous plant to provide the much needed perspective I sought and it opened my eyes to the deception surrounding the plant.
The more I dug, the more I learned about the history and political implications of cannabis. Yet now, today we have television shows, focuses solely on cannabis, we have soccer moms taking vape hits and senior citizens munching down edibles.
People no longer feel the guilt associated with using cannabis. I recently read an article in the Washington Post that dealt with this subject. The interview spoke to a woman in her early 30s who started smoking cannabis again after decades of abstinence.
People are replacing their wine glasses with glass pipes. They are discovering that when you use a substance correctly, it can provide great benefit. This is where we as humanity are maturing. We’re understanding that our lives are constantly in peril, yet this is no reason to legislate against danger or potential risks.
We are seeing, for the second time, that prohibiting substances for the “public good” does the exact opposite. We are realizing that if we leave our human rights in the hands of politicians, we’ll only suffer the consequences of greed and power.
Cannabis is making its comeback. The last player to fall in line is the United States. Their empire of prohibition is crumbling one state at a time and even on a federal level there are talks about dissipating the system that has held Americans [and the rest of the world] in a chokehold for far too long.
We’re about to enter into a new age, or rather…we are entering into a new age of drug consumption. Cannabis is only the catalyst that will do away with a system that’s modus operandi is nothing more than pure simple oppression.
Cannabis no longer is taboo. It’s something you can talk about in a conversation without having too much resistance. The vast majority of the people believe in medical cannabis; a great majority believes in recreational cannabis.
The image of the average cannabis consumer has shifted as well. Gone are the Cheech and Chong era where stoners were freedom-loving hippies looking to get high. Nowadays we have doctors, lawyers, business owners, parents and grandparents all partaking.
In fact, the average cannabis user is in his/her mid-thirties and make roughly 50k-70k per year. They pay taxes, they participate in society, they are outstanding citizens. We even have major corporations entering into the cannabis game.
It was obvious that Pharma would want their stake in the marijuana pie, but then we also see companies like Coca Cola and beer companies eyeing the industry. That is because the future of cannabis will be like nothing we have ever seen in the past.
Of course, you’ll still be able to buy flower from craft growers, but the mainstream marijuana game will look very different. Apart from being able to buy “packs of joints” at your local store, you’ll also be able to get a wide range of edibles, drinks, extracts, and other products made from cannabis.
Marijuana will eventually just become a prime material used to be infused in branded products. We’ll have standardized doses and condition specific cannabis medication. The world is now in its infancy, and it is safe to say that cannabis will be legal globally within the next ten years.
What happens after that?
One can only speculate, but if you’re taking a look at the trends surrounding the ‘once taboo substances’, including things like LSD, Mescaline, Psilocybin and the likes…the future will have a more inclusive drug policy. A policy where education trumps superstitions, where reason has a chance to flourish.
Of course, it took decades for cannabis to break through the prohibitory wall that was placed around it. We don’t know how long it will take for other drugs such as psilocybin to make the same transformation. Studies are under way, but for those substances it will take much longer.
Nonetheless, Cannabis was the first brick in a wall that is being removed. People will be able to see clearly what’s on the other side, a society that tolerates the experimentation of the self. A place where exploring your own consciousness isn’t against the law.
But first, enough people need to smoke the paradigm breaking herb to open their mind’s eye to the possibilities of living in a world where you actually have a sovereign right over your own mind and body.
