Why you should build an outdoor grow hub!
We can all agree that growing cannabis indoor can get quite costly with artificial lights, ventilation and a myriad of other hidden expenses.
The primary driver of cost within a grow operation comes down to lights and temperature control. One of the primary reasons why growers tend to grow indoors is because of anti-cannabis laws.
With such a high prevalence of indoor growing, the cannabis industry as a whole have become quite inefficient in how it uses energy.
But with laws quickly changing – old technologies in new skins emerge!
The Outdoor Grow Hut
Believe it or not but the Grow Hut is patent pending. The Outdoor Grow Hut is essentially an indoor grow tent – but outdoors.
I know – not the most inventive of inventions but functional nonetheless.
The grow hut is essentially a room you can assemble outdoors with mesh that hides the plant while allowing the sunlight to come through. In other words, a portable greenhouse.
The difference here is that this greenhouse is directly geared for growing cannabis and if you purchase it from the site – you’ll get a few seeds for good measure.
It’s not a bad deal if you’re thinking about buying an all-in-one-solution for your outdoor growing needs. This specific product comes equipped with everything you’ll need to grow your own outdoor harvest making it easy for first time growers.
I’m not sure if it could be “patent worthy” but I’m sure it’s got a few unique design aspects that could probably let it be granted some sort of proprietary protection.
Nonetheless – these kinds of solutions should be considered for the home grower who does not want to significantly increase their utility bill with an indoor grow operation.
According to the manufacturer – the Grow Hut can help plants survive extreme weather conditions such as extreme heat or cold.
Why Growing Outdoors is the way to go
Personally, I like to have a hybrid option. For example, I like to keep a mother plant indoors and just bush her out under assorted CFL lights.
However – when it comes to flowering I like to use the Sun. It’s only the most powerful source of light we have available for free!
I know some of you are afraid of getting busted, and in these instances building your own outdoor grow chamber can help diminish the risks. You’d also have to grow some other plants as cover – but if you’re careful you can always grow between 3-6 plants under the radar.
The reason why I am such a strong advocate for outdoor growing is because it’s so easy and effective. Depending on how “Pro” you want to go, you can crop out buds for pennies to the gram.
Growing outdoors eliminates the need for high powered lights and if you build a grow house outside – you can also minimize the risk of pests and other undesirables.
Finally – and this is probably a personal observation – the flavor profile of growing in soil is just better.
I know there are some people who will contest me with passion in saying that hydro is better, but when it comes to cost, margin of error, and final product – outdoor cultivation beats indoor cultivation no contest.
The basics of building a Grow Chamber
I once built a makeshift green house out of PVC tubes and some white mesh I bought at Home Depot. I essentially make a giant cube structure with the PVC tubes, and secured it with a few cross-beams (also made from PVC).
I then covered the entire thing in a white mesh making a cube of sorts. Wind easily passed through the mesh and there was enough mesh to make it hard to see what type of plants I was growing.
You can also plant all around the edges some other plants as an additional smokescreen.
In the center, I grew six weed plants each in their own pots and seeing that the structure could esily be adapted for outdoor Scrogging – I did just that.
In order to enter and exit the cube, I simply cut the mesh and then placed some Velcro on the edges to create a makeshift & securable entryway.
Of course, unlike the Grow Hut – this didn’t have padlocks, but I also wasn’t too afraid of someone swanking my weed – I have a dog that looks like a bear.
This structure worked perfectly.
Here’s a more complex version of what I just described. There’s no need to replicate this version – you could if you want – but more importantly, if you learn the fundamental principles – you can modify this to your liking.
Essentially you’re building the frame from PVC and covering it with a clear, breathable mesh. The wind should easily be able to pass through.
The beauty of this set up is that even if it is raining hard – the mesh will turn the downpour into a mist and your plants will be able to grow without drowning. Additionally, it’s far more difficult for pests to get to your plants.
It’s not impossible – just harder.
Buy or Build – but Grow Outside
If you can’t you can’t and that’s okay. But if there’s a possibility to take your cannabis growing activities outside – you’ll notice a drastic change in cost of production and you’ll notice a better taste profile in the weed.
Perhaps the micronutrients of the soil helps make the terpene production more robust or perhaps the sun’s rays have other properties that just makes the plant taste richer.
Irrespective – if more places are permitting home cultivation, it’s worth your investment to consider an outdoor solution. It’s not just good for your pocket but the environment also.
If you’re worried about cannabis thieves or even pesky neighbors, making the entire growhouse and then planting “decoy crops” will help put people off your trail.
If you’re worried about stinking – 6 plants won’t really stank up the place too much in an outdoor environment. You may get a whiff every now and then.
In these cases, plant some aromatic plants as a smokescreen.
Growing outside is just easier & more cost efficient in my books and if you’ve got the possibility to take your operation outside – I highly recommend that you do.
