Homemade CBD Dog Treats to Make in Quarantine

how to make cbd dog treats at home

We all want our pets to be happy. For those of us who are dog mamas and papas, making sure our dogs are well looked after and cared for is paramount. Nothing’s worse than having a pup that’s under the weather or having problems with pain and inflammation. Luckily, just like humans, dogs can also benefit from the healing properties of CBD. In fact, any animal with a backbone (classified as chordate) can due to their endocannabinoid system.

The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is a biological system that’s responsible for maintaining homeostasis in the body. It also regulates a number of bodily functions, including pain management, appetite, sleep, and reproduction. Since dogs are part of the chordata kingdom, they are equipped with an ECS, just like us, and, therefore, can benefit from CBD’s anti-inflammatory properties.

While more research still needs to be done in the area of CBD’s effect on pets, there exists a lot of anecdotal evidence that it can work. According to Dr. Gary Richter, a veterinarian who specializes in integrative medicine in Oakland, California, CBD can help dogs with pain, seizure control, gastrointestinal disorders, and anxiety-related problems, just like humans. He’s also seen some positive results with cancer. In an interview with Project CBD, Richter talked about the important factors when using CBD to treat your dog’s issues.

-    Always consult your local veterinarian before you start a treatment regime. Even if they do not specialize in alternative treatments, chances are, they know someone who does and can walk you through proper dosing and can decide on what the best treatment is for your furry companion.

-    It’s always best to err on the side of underdosing. Dogs are extra sensitive to THC due to having a higher concentration of cannabinoid receptors in their brain compared to other animals. This makes them more susceptible to THC overdose, a component in a lot of full-spectrum CBD products.

-    Liquid preparations of CBD, such as CBD oils, are easier to administer as they are easily adjustable compared to pill or capsule form. This makes it easy to titrate and add to foods or liquids that your dog is consuming, like edible doggy treats!

For millions of people stuck at home these days, cooking has become a form of therapy. For many, quarantine cooking has been a way to cope with the stress of being home 24/7, and has produced many positive results for people. So why not get your favorite furry friend into the mix? While they can’t exactly help you, they’ll be more than happy to gobble up any and all treats you make them. And an added bonus: they get to reap the benefits CBD has to offer. Win-win! Here are a few recipes they’re sure to love.

CBD iced yogurt treats

With summer fast approaching and temperature’s rising, your pup will surely appreciate a nice cooling doggy treat to help them regulate their body temperature and keep them cool during the summer months.

Ingredients:

-    1 cup of unsweetened, plain yogurt

-    1 ice tray

-    CBD oil

Directions:

1.     If your yogurt is thick, give it a little stir first to loosen it up and ensure easy pouring.

2.     Pour the yogurt into the ice tray, making sure to fill each space evenly. Use a rubber spatular to distribute any overflows or uneven pours.

3.     Take a dropper and drop the oil (according to desired dosage) into each cube. 1 cube will produce roughly 2 tablespoons of yogurt.

4.     Place tray in freezer and wait at least 8 hours until completely frozen.

5.     Give your dog a cube and watch them enjoy it! Don’t worry about clean up, they usually take care of it.
