The time for the end of prohibition is near, however we’re still facing stiff opposition whenever we bring up this topic. For those against the legalization of cannabis, they believe that keeping prohibition as is, is the only way we can do anything about “drugs”.
Whenever someone brings up an alternative to current drug policy, we hear the rehashed arguments of old still making its rounds. However, there is no evidence to suggest that prohibition has ever worked.
Today we’ll be talking about two examples on “How prohibition can never work”.
Super Max Drugs
Prison is probably a prohibitionist’s ideal scenario. Twenty-four- hour surveillance, people are kept under lock and key and all incoming and outgoing couriers are checked by guards. Under this system, one would imagine that there are absolutely no drugs in prison. One would be entirely wrong in this conclusion.
Drugs in prison is part of the economy. I recently spoke to a ‘Cholo’ who did a six-year stretch in Federal prison as well as a few years in State prison. In every system that he was in, he could score drugs. The prices are elevated, the quality is shabby…but under the circumstances anything is better than nothing (according to prisoners). The ‘homie’ explained to me that drugs is just a part of the economy in prison.
People need something to do when they have nothing to do, and what’s better than doing drugs when you have nothing to do?
Whether the drugs are smuggled in by friends/family members of prisoners, or corrupt prison guards, they always seem to find a way inside the secured walls of “the slammer”.
The Question we must be asking, “under a totalitarian living situation, how is it that they can’t keep illegal drugs out of the system?” The answer is quite simple; “you can’t”!
Where there is a demand, there will always be a supply. In other words, even if the United States were to mimic the system of Super Max…drugs will still find its way into the system whether you are monitoring people 24/7 or not. It’s a fact of life.
The Failure of the First Prohibition Story
Then we jump back into time. What’s the first ever prohibition story you ever heard? Most people will think of social circumstances in trying to answer this question, however for most, the first ever story of prohibition comes from the Bible.
God made Adam and Eve (and Steve if you’re into that thing). Then after God made all the living things, he created paradise called the Garden of Eden. Within the Garden there was a tree known as “The Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil”. According to the Bible, the fruit of the Tree was prohibited to be ingested by Adam and Eve because they were “perfect as is”. “Unblemished” is the correct word.
Nonetheless, naked Adam and Eve were just chilling in the garden when a snake came slithering in and said, “Sup fool, wanna eat of that dank assed tree?” (paraphrased). Adam, being the good citizen of the garden was like, “Hell no, God told me not to do it!”
Eve on the other hand was like, “Well it does look tasty” and the snake was like, “Oh it’s the best!”
Eventually Eve took a bite and suddenly she was like, “Oh snap I’m naked and alone, I must convince my man meat to do the same”. Since man cannot resist some good ol “Woof cookie”, Adam eventually ate from the fruit as well.
Fast forward, God’s pissed and bans them from the Garden of Eden.
What’s the take away? When God himself set up a system of prohibition, it failed. Who’s to think that man can do any better.
We will always want to try what we are not supposed to, and that is just the nature of humankind. We are curious little bastards always eager to bend or break the rules to get what we cannot. So if prohibition doesn’t work in prison, nor did it work in the Garden of Eden, what makes you think it would ever work in any country on earth?
