8 Ways To Grind Weed Without A Grinder

It’s happened to the best of us: getting ready to have an epic smoke session, either alone or with friends, and realizing that you don’t have your only grinder with you.

So how are you supposed to break up your pot?

After all, grinding your cannabis is a crucial part of the experience, so when you don’t have one with you, it could be a hindrance to actually getting high. Whether you’ve lost it, lent it to a friend and forgot about it (stoner moment!), or are on vacation and left it at home, not having a grinder can make just about anyone lose their cool.

The good news is, there’s hope. The absence of a grinder doesn’t mean that you can’t make good use of your newly-bought top-shelf stash. Basic everyday household items can also be used as effective alternatives to your trusty grinder.

Here are some great tried-and-tested alternatives to your trusty old grinder:

  • Scissors: If you don’t have a grinder, scissors are the next best thing to grinders. It’s pretty straightforward: just snip away at your bud, but make sure that the ground pot is caught safely somewhere, like straight into your rolling paper, or at least a cup. Another way to use scissors is to pair it up with a shot glass; just place the bud into a shot glass and snip it up directly within the glass with the scissors. This is pretty mess-free, convenient, and fast.

  • Knife and cutting board: Pretty much everyone has a knife and cutting board lying around. But to succeed grinding your weed finely with a knife, you need a really sharp one. This is going to cause some trouble if you use a dull knife and work with sticky pot, because most of it is just going to end up on the blade.

  • Blender: It’s a bit extreme, but for stoners who like their cannabis ground really finely, you should definitely give blenders a try. Even if you have a grinder. Because it’s just that effective. One thing to keep in mind is that blenders are tricky to clean, so there is a bit of a drawback.

  • Coffee grinder: If you’re going to need a large batch of ground pot, perhaps for making oils or edibles, a coffee grinder is your best bet. It’s an effective tool for grinding large quantities yet leaving you with an ultra-fine consistency, which is necessary for decarboxylation anyway. It’ll be a pain in the ass to clean but using a coffee grinder is definitely worth it for making oils and edibles.

  • Cheese grater: Grating pot using a cheese grater is pretty similar to the process involved in grating cheese. All you need to do is hold your bud then rub it against the blades of a grater, using the smallest holes possible. Even better if you have a microplane! Just be sure to use a grater that’s been thoroughly cleaned, and clean it well before returning it to your mom’s kitchen.

  • Razor: Using a razor to grind your weed is similar to using a knife. Place your bud on a cutting board or any other flat, clean, and dry surface. Use a razor to chop it up slowly and carefully. This technique isn’t ideal for the clumsy ones; if you have a knife around and aren’t comfortable working with a sharp razor, opt for that instead.

  • Pestle and mortar: This common kitchen tool can also be used to grind up your pot. However, it’s best suited for pot that’s a bit on the dry side, since it can be a bit challenging when you’re working with sticky pot. To do so, just break up the buds using your hand, then toss them into the mortar. Crush it with the pestle until you reach the consistency that you’re after.

  • Your hands: Last but not least, you can always use your hands. The only downside to doing so is that it will take up a lot of time, but it’s super effective. To grind them while minimizing your damage on the trichomes, pick apart the bud and separate the stems so that you only have small bits of flower to work with. Avoid leaving chunks that are too large because this could give you a bad burn if you’re rolling a blunt or joint.
