In the last few years, CBD or Cannabidiol, the highly beneficial phytocannabinoid, has been touted as an all-around treatment for an ever-expanding list of conditions and diseases, from common ones like insomnia and anxiety to more serious ones like multiple sclerosis and epilepsy. But apart from its benefits as an oral remedy, it’s also gained popularity as a topical one, with a number of highly reputable skincare brands releasing CBD-infused salves and lotions that can be used to treat skin conditions, muscle pain, arthritis, or just to keep the skin looking healthy and glowing.
Reasons to use CBD for skin
1. Anti-inflammatory properties - CBD’s anti-inflammatory properties are the main reason why it’s become so popular and beneficial for many people. Inflammation in the body can lead to a number of conditions and diseases. When it comes to the skin, this can manifest in the form of conditions such as psoriasis and eczema. Thus, CBD-infused products can help reduce inflammation and treat those conditions.
2. Reduces lipid production from sebaceous glands - One of the leading causes of acne is overactive sebaceous glands. CBD helps reduce lipid production, thus regulating the skin’s oil levels and reducing acne.
3. Reduces redness and soothes breakouts - Thanks to its anti-inflammatory properties, CBD can calm and sooth the skin, reducing redness and minimizing breakouts.
4. Anti-aging properties - CBD’s antioxidant properties help counteract free-radical damage in the skin, thereby inhibiting the forming of fine lines and wrinkles.
Benefits of making your own CBD topical
- You know exactly what’s in it. Most commercial skincare products come with a long list of ingredients and may contain potentially harmful chemicals that may end up doing more damage than good in the long-run. Making your own topical means that you decide just how many or few ingredients go into it.
- You decide the strength. CBD’s rising popularity means that many are just looking to cash in on the hype without ensuring that they provide a product that’s actually beneficial to customers. As a result, products touting CBD as an ingredient can be misleading and may only contain an insignificant amount. By making your own, you can ensure your topical contains the right amount of CBD to be effective.
Knowing your carrier oils
Before diving into creating your own CBD topical, it’s important to understand and figure out which carrier oil you’d like to use for your facial oil or salve. To do this, you’ll need to first determine if you want to use it for your face or body. If you’re using it for your face, you’ll need to use oils that are non-comedogenic, meaning they won’t clog your pores. Clogged pores can cause a build of oil and dirt, leading to acne. Oils that are highly comedogenic include coconut oil, soybean oil, wheat germ oil, and flax seed oil. These oils are better suited for the body, which means you can use these for lotions or salves.
Meanwhile, oils with low comedogenic ratings include tomato seed oil, squalene oil, goji berry seed oil, argan oil, and castor oil, among a slew of others. These are recommended for facial use as they have a 0 to 1 rating on the comedogenic scale. Rosehip seed oil is also recommended for facial use as it has a 1 comedogenic rating.
