According to the Centers for Disease Control, an estimated 1.1 billion people around the world use tobacco. And if you’re one of these cigarette smokers, then you know just how hard it can be to quit smoking.

Tobacco alone kills over 7 million people annually; over 6 million of these deaths are preventable because they are caused by direct tobacco consumption. We know this, yet we continue to light up the cancer stick. Each day, thousands of people struggle with quitting cigarettes but, it isn’t called a struggle for nothing. This dangerous habit makes us feel good, calms us down when we are angry or stressed, and goes well with booze. Those are just some of the reasons why people continue smoking, despite the fact that it kills our insides slowly.

The business of quitting smoking could be nearly as profitable as tobacco itself. Each year, there are new products or mechanisms being developed that promise smokers they help you quit smoking. There’s the nicotine patch and smokers’ anonymous to name a few.

But few things have been quite as successful as CBD itself.

Why Is CBD The Best Cessation Tool Out There?

Cannabidiol (CBD), a non-psychoactive compound in cannabis, is known for its ability to treat a multitude of conditions, including addiction.

A study published in Addictive Behaviors Journal revealed that CBD oil is beneficial in helping to kick the nicotine habit. At the very least, it can help decrease the number of cigarettes smoked in a day.

More importantly, the study was one of many that cemented many scientists’ hypotheses that the endocannabinoid system plays a role in addiction.

The researchers from the University College London used a pilot, randomized, double-blind placebo study to investigate how CBD affects smokers who want to quit the habit. It involved 24 participants, who were divided into two groups; one group was administered a placebo, while the rest took CBD oil via an inhaler each time they wanted to smoke a cigarette.

The study took place over a week, and the researchers found that the participants who consumed CBD oil were able to reduce their cigarette consumption by as much as 40%. In a follow-up analysis, they found that CBD’s effects continued long after the trials among the patients who took real CBD oil as opposed to placebo.

Dr. Morgan, one of the lead researchers in the study, said that the 40% improvement rate was much higher than expected. Due to these results, the researchers concluded that CBD has the potential to be used to treat cigarette addiction, but that more research is needed.

However, using CBD as a cessation tool is nothing new; only the study of it has less than we’d like.

But how exactly can you use CBD to kick the habit?

There’s no one-size fits all answer right now, but here’s what we know: CBD isn’t intoxicating, so there’s no harm in using it to help you quit smoking. However, it does have significant health benefits which you can use in a variety of ways.

Hemp-derived CBD products with less than 0.3% THC is legal in all 50 states, so choosing the right product is entirely up to you. You can choose from CBD-rich flower, dabs, chewing gum, vaporizers, and even patches. Some people may prefer to use CBD flower as an immediate tobacco replacement, but this is advisable only in the beginning. If you find yourself needing the oral fix and it’s insatiable, then allow yourself to smoke or vape CBD-rich flower in the beginning.

Keep in mind that the most successful quitters are those who are able to replace the act of smoking with a healthier habit. Find out what your trigger is: is it drinking alcohol? Eating a heavy meal? After work? After sex? No matter what gives you the urge to smoke, find a healthier habit. Smoking CBD isn’t a sustainable long-term solution. This might be a good time to start that yoga or meditation class, too.

Additionally, you’ll also want to consider reevaluating your lifestyle, including your nutrient and supplement intake. You may want to take CBD orally by capsule to help with the cravings, as well as the anxiety and stress.
