$50 Grow Box Update – When the Girls Start Flowering

Roughly a month ago I wrote about a $50 grow box I built from crap I found at local stores. Big enough to fit about two plants, I wanted to see how two big CFL lights would perform in producing a yield and if it was actually possible to crop out something decent with such a basic set up.

This box is ideal for anyone who lives in a place where cannabis use and growing is still not considered “okay” but still would like to partake in the great adventure we call “growing cannabis”.

Throughout my life, I had attempted to grow at many locations. Most of my efforts were squashed by external forces, whether it was a parent who didn’t understand or just roommates that got too jumpy at the idea of growing indoors. I had to forfeit my attempts on several occasions however with this grow box, I didn’t run into those problems.

Sure, “Ms. Reefer” wasn’t too keen on me growing, but expressing my desire to actually do it, she looked the other way. The way I set up the box makes it virtually impossible to know “what I’m growing” unless you open it, which makes this box a perfect stealth growing weapon.

For the plants, I approached it with soil mainly because I was too lazy to go buy nutrients and had some soil mixes on hand. The plants were growing fine until me (the total noob) overfed it with nutrients and the leaf started canopying. I freaked out, but fortunately one of my grower friends told me to “flush it with rain water”.

I did, and the plant recovered quite nicely.

What makes this box stealth?

During the past two weeks I moved to a new place. One of my plants already started flowering, the other one was about to. Nonetheless, I had to move it without being detected. It was a difficult task seeing that I didn’t have a car at the time and had to rely on Uber to get the job done. I ordered an Uber minivan, and simply covered the box with a large plastic black bag.

The move went on without a snag and I managed to get the box in my new place without anyone asking any questions whatsoever. Fortunately, the flowering process was still in its infancy stages meaning that it didn’t emit too much of an odor either.

In the end, I found that this portable $50 grow box is working perfectly however there are a few things I’m going to change in the next grow. I should be able to harvest in the next month or so and once that is done, I’ll move onto a new technique.

Getting more bud for your box

It’s hard to tell now, but I think I’ll be able to pull out between 1-2 ounces out of the box with my current set up. I essentially just let the plants grow as they please trimming off some leaf every now and then to give it shape. Once the plant got to a certain height, I topped it and it stopped growing “upwards” and is now budding out to the sides.

Nonetheless, I find this method to produce very little to what the potential of the box is. My next approach, starting in a month will be to SCROG it. Seeing that I can only fit two plants in there comfortably, I assume that by focusing the flowering process into a SCROG will allow me to grow bigger buds and at a higher rate. Nonetheless, my $50 was well spent and my light bill hardly felt the change in increased power.

You can see one of the buds beginning to flower here in this picture I took. I’ll also make an update once I crop out to tell you exactly how much I pulled from this little “ghetto grow box”.

Nonetheless, I have to say I am quite impressed with this grow box and I strongly recommend for beginner growers who don’t have the budget for big lights and all that jazz to consider this as an alternative to growing your own.

It’s true when they say “smoking weed isn’t addictive, growing it is”. I find myself sitting next to my box talking to my plants at night time, seeing how they develop into mature “sensimilla”.

I personally think every stoner should grow weed at least once in their life. You obtain a totally new perspective on the herb we love so much.
