Cannabis can do no harm. Right?

Right.

Just like alcohol, consuming cannabis for recreational purposes should also be done in moderation. This is why many users choose to microdose cannabis both for recreational and medical purposes.  It’s forgivable if you were in high school and it was the “cool” thing to be able to smoke 2 blunts within 30 minutes by yourself. However, there can be consequences if you aren’t a responsible user. I know this myself; I’ve actually passed out twice in public for smoking much more than I really should have.

Aside from embarrassment, consuming too much cannabis can have other consequences in the form of a hangover. Yes, hangovers from cannabis are real, but most of the time they happen when you’ve had too much… just like with booze.

STONER HANGOVER

Symptoms of a Cannabis Hangover

Fatigue: The most common symptom of a cannabis hangover is fatigue. This happens because cannabis affects your REM sleep cycle, and in some people cannabis use right before bedtime causes them to sleep shorter.  If this sounds like you, switch to an indica strain before bed, or avoid smoking before bedtime altogether so that you can enjoy a full 8 hours of sleep.

Headache: Certain strains can give you cotton mouth, so smoking too much can definitely cause you to be dehydrated. Dehydration causes headaches, but the remedy to this is simple: drink a lot of water and fluids to prevent headaches the next day.

Red Eyes: The biggest telltale sign that you’ve consumed cannabis is red eyes. In some cases, red eyes can persist until the following morning especially if you’ve taken too much bud. This can be remedied by drinking a lot of water, or using strains that have a lower THC content.

Brain Fog: Some people experience brain fog, or a sense of mental sluggishness the day after using too much. To combat this, go for a run or a nice fun workout and drink some coffee.

How To Prevent Hangovers From Cannabis

Don’t smoke too much: While there’s nothing lethal about smoking too much, just use a moderate amount if you have a big morning or are prone to cannabis hangovers. It also helps to know your limits; if you haven’t eaten an edible in a long time, or never have, the smart thing to do is to avoid overconsumption. Whether you’re smoking, vaping, or eating the stuff, pace yourself before you follow up.

WATER AND HYDRATION

Always stay hydrated: Waking up feeling like your mouth is a desert is never fun. Almost any fluid will do to keep you hydrated, but water is still always the best choice. Staying hydrated will prevent you feeling like a train just ran over your head several times the night before.

EATING EDIBLES AT BED

Timing: Don’t eat an edible before bed – these things can last for several hours and it is entirely possible to wake up still high. This can have a detrimental impact while you’re at work, and will only contribute to the lazy stoner stereotype. Being a responsible consumer means that you have to carefully time your intake.

cannabis and sleep

Sleep: Getting enough shut-eye can help get rid of a cannabis hangover, the same way that sleeping more will also help you feel better after you’ve knocked back 2 bottles of wine by yourself the night before.

Bottomline: Everyone reacts differently to cannabis, so the same methods of prevention and management may not be the same for two people. If you tend to experience cannabis hangovers a lot, this isn’t normal and this means that you need to change something in the way you consume. It could either be trying out a new strain, switching to a strain with lower THC, smoking or eating less, or choosing the time when you ingest.

A study in 1998 revealed that “residual effects of smoking a single marijuana cigarette are minimal.” Ten participants were studied, based on how they felt after smoking more than one joint. It’s more common for people to experience a cannabis hangover if they’ve consumed more than a single joint in a short amount of time.

Nothing beats just how sucky it is to have an alcohol hangover; thankfully, cannabis hangovers are much more tolerable (and worth it!)
