Cannabis For Rosacea
Does Cannabis Skin Cream Help with Rosacea and Skin Rashes? from CannabisNet on Vimeo.
Rosacea is a common skin condition that tends to affect adults over 30. Common symptoms include redness on parts of the face such as the cheeks, chin, nose, and forehead. Some patients with rosacea also get small pimples and bumps on the read areas of the face. In some cases, rosacea can cause soreness and burning in the eyes.
While rosacea isn’t fatal, it can significantly affect one’s quality of life. It can cause problems with self-esteem, so much that some no longer have the confidence to report to the office or participate in social situations.
No one is quite sure about the cause of rosacea, except that it has to do with an irritation to the skin. People who blush easily or who have fair skin are the most commonly afflicted with rosacea, and it’s also understood that it’s hereditary.
Symptoms of rosacea can get worse through triggers, which is when an external stimulus causes the blood vessels to expand, causing redness in the face. Common rosacea triggers are exposure to sun and wind, exercise, hot weather, alcohol, hot baths, and spicy food. Going from hot to cold temperatures or vice versa can also trigger rosacea.
There is no cure for rosacea, but doctors prescribe medications as well as other treatments. The most common treatments are antibiotics, dermatological products, artificial tears, or even cosmetic surgery and intense pulsed light (IPL) in extreme cases.
How Can Cannabis Help?
Topical and oral administration of cannabis has proven useful in the management of rosacea symptoms. Aside from providing relief for the physical symptoms, many patients find that using cannabis also helps with the anxiety, emotional and mental stress of being diagnosed with rosacea. Cannabis has been known to have potent anti-inflammatory properties and is a potent source of antioxidants, which can greatly reduce the redness and inflammation on the face that occurs in patients.
A 2013 study conducted by Germany’s University of Bonn revealed that the THC content of cannabis has been useful in treating inflammation symptoms that is caused by allergies. The study says that the plant has ““important implications for the future development of strategies to harness cannabinoids for the treatment of inflammatory skin diseases.”
While there are still few studies analyzing the impact of cannabis on rosacea specifically, there is significant anecdotal evidence of people using it to treat rosacea.
Topical application of cannabis and cannabis-related skin products would be more beneficial in the treatment of rosacea. Hemp seed oil is also another popular alternative used in the treatment of rosacea symptoms. Hemp seed oil is a good source of essential fatty acids and has a wide range of nutritional benefits. It contains metabolites such as gamma linoleic acid (GLA), stearidonic acid, and oleic acid, all of which are extremely beneficial in treating inflammation-related skin problems such as rosacea as well as eczema.
A 2005 study showed that hemp seed oil, when used on people with eczema, was successful in gradually improving the condition of skin especially in reducing itchiness and dryness because of its polyunsaturated fatty acid content. These acids are also beneficial for treating irritation and redness caused by rosacea and acne. Hemp seed oil also contains important nutrients that can improve the overall elasticity of the skin while reducing the redness caused by rosacea. The cannabinoid content can provide relief from inflammation and help balance cell growth.
Another great topical alternative is cannabis oil, which is rich in vitamins particularly B1, B2, B3, B6, C, D and E. The high omega 3 and omega 6 content both promotes circulation and protects against aging. By promoting circulation, applying cannabis oil can be effective in reducing the symptoms of rosacea.
