Want To Get More CBD Into Your System? Eat A High Fat Diet Says Study
Fatty Foods Are Key To Affecting Bioavailability Of CBD
With around 3.4 million Americans suffering from epilepsy, a safe and effective treatment is necessary.
But epilepsy is the kind of condition that doesn’t get treated once. Epilepsy requires a lifetime of maintenance medication including lifestyle changes to minimize seizures because they interfere with the patient’s quality of life.
We now know that cannabidiol (CBD), the non-psychoactive medicinal compound in the cannabis plant is beneficial for people with epilepsy, including infants and children.
But there’s now new science revealing that combining CBD with a high-fat diet may be the best way to help your body absorb more cannabidiol. Epileptic or not, this is good news for people who want to reap the benefits of CBD.
The University of Michigan study which was published in the journal Epilepsia studied the impact of fatty food on how the body absorbs CBD. For the study, researchers measured CBD concentrations among a group of epilepsy patients enrolled at the MINCEP Epilepsy Care clinic. They also assessed the effect, if any, of fasting.
The subjects were being administered with 99% pure CBD capsules. The researchers examined concentrations from the patients who consumed CBD after eating a fatty breakfast as well as those on an empty stomach, then compared the findings.
“The type of food can make a large difference in the amount of CBD that gets absorbed into the body. Although fatty foods can increase the absorption of CBD, it can also increase the variability as not all meals contain the same amount of fat,” explains Angela Birnbuam, a co-author of the study and a professor in the College of Pharmacy.
“Increases in the amount of CBD dose being absorbed into the body can also lead to lower medication costs,” adds co-author Ilo Leppik, who is also a professor at the College of Pharmacy and a professor at the Medical School.
The researchers also discovered that exposure to CBD is improved when CBD is taken alongside high fat food. When they compared the results with those who were fasting, they found that bioavailability of CBD in the body increased four-fold when taken with food. In fact, in one participant, they even found that CBD levels jumped 14 times.
“For epilepsy patients, a goal is to maintain consistent blood concentrations of drug,” Birnbaum says. “This study shows that CBD concentrations could vary significantly if patients take it differently, sometimes with or without food. Variations in blood concentrations could leave a patient more susceptible to seizures.”
Though the studies on this topic are few and far in between, there is indeed a connection between CBD, a high-fat diet, and epilepsy that is worth probing into deeper. It is certainly worth studying for people who are epileptic; it is no wonder that doctors recommend that they go on high fat diets such as the ketogenic diet, in order to reap the physical as well as mental benefits of this powerful healing combination.
Other Benefits of CBD and A Low Carb Diet
Aside from epilepsy, both CBD and a high fat or ketogenic diet have been proven to treat other conditions, including depression, obesity, schizophrenia, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and many more. If CBD and a high fat diet can treat these conditions, can you imagine the benefits of combining them together?
Speaking of obesity, even celebrities have discovered the vast benefits of pairing CBD with a low carb diet for weight loss. Some of them include the Kardashians, Gwyneth Paltrow, Joe Rogan, and Halle Berry among others.
Even if you aren’t trying to lose weight or cure a condition, you too can benefit from a low carb diet and taking CBD simultaneously. Both do wonders in fighting inflammation and increase focus. It might not be easy to start out with a low carb diet or trying to get into ketosis, but if you ask anyone who’s doing the ketogenic diet, the results speak for themselves and it’s all worth it.
It’s no secret that sugary food and carbohydrates contribute to inflammation. It will also contribute to aging. So load up on the good fat, cut down on sugar, and see the results it will bring.
