It’s happened to the best of us: the patient who ingests too much edibles in search of pain relief, and the toker who accidentally dabs too much. No matter how you put it, getting too stoned is a reality and it can happen to anyone. Whether it’s through smoking or eating, there are so many ways that getting “too high” can happen. Don’t worry - there is zero risk of overdosing, but being too stoned can be extremely uncomfortable even for the most seasoned of users.

 

If this happens to you or someone you know, just follow these tips:

 

First of all, relax: overdosing on marijuana is impossible, so just take a few deep breaths and don’t overthink it. Everything is going to be ok; just be patient and ride out your high.

 

If you’re suffering from anxiety or paranoia caused by your high, smell some black pepper, or eat food that contains some of it. Black pepper contains beta-caryophyllene, a terpene that has been proven useful in counteracting paranoia and anxiety caused by marijuana. You might sneeze after sniffing some, but that’s totally normal and part of it.

 

Keep yourself hydrated with as much water as possible, just avoid drinking caffeinated or alcoholic drinks when you’re too stoned or this might just make things worse. Drinking water, or any other cold, refreshing drink like  juice can help fight the uncomfortable symptoms that accompany getting high such as cotton mouth while helping you stay focused on one act that feels good: sipping something cold.

 

Lie down, rest, and sleep it off if you must. Sometimes the simplest yet most effective method to combating a high is just by sleeping it off. Find a quiet area (your own bedroom is best), and let your mind wander until it eventually gets tired and the weed helps you fall asleep. Even a short nap can do wonders!

 

Get your best bud on speed dial. Talking out your hit to someone who can keep you distracted or keep reassuring you that you’ll be fine can greatly help you ride out your high. This can be helpful especially if your bud is also familiar with what you’re going through.

 

If you’re home, take a cold shower or soak up in a relaxing bath. While a cold shower isn’t exactly relaxing, it can help wake you up and perk up your cells to counter the intense high that you’re experiencing. On the other hand, staying even up to an hour in a cozy warm bath (with music, candles, the works!) is extremely invigorating and will make you feel good enough to forget why you’re worried about being too high in the first place.

 

Get some light exercise in, like going for a jog or a walk. Exercise will give you endorphins which will put you in a good mood, and improve cortisol production, reduce adrenalin, and lower tension. As a bonus, exercise will also be a useful distraction to the uncomfortable feelings you are experiencing.

 

If you have some CBD oil lying around, take it. CBD is valued for its anxiety-fighting properties, and can be extremely effective in counteracting the high from taking too much THC. CBD supplements are also a great alternative.

Don’t panic. The cops aren’t outside to get you, and despite your increased heart rate everything’s just going to be fine. In any way, at least they’re better than Snoop Dogg’s advice to put your face in mayonnaise.
