Reefer Madness is commonly known as the era where fake stories about the dangers of marijuana was being pushed down the throats of unsuspecting Americans. The stories back then were wild. From violent ax murderers to raping minorities seeking to deflower white girls…the reefer madness era was largely responsible for turning America against its preferred medicine…cannabis.

While the Reefer Madness era ended in the late 1930’s (officially), the rhetoric stuck through the decades and still finds its way into modern day media. One such stories recently made headlines on multiple news sources, yet when you really analyze the content of the story, you can clearly see the Reefer Madness sprinkled across the intention of the article.

Modern Day Reefer Madness at Work

The story I’m referring to was entitled, “Colorado Town’s Water Supply may be tainted with marijuana chemical.” Seriously, after reading the title, especially for people who know absolutely nothing about cannabis, you would think that marijuana is a dangerous drug that could negatively affect the masses.

According to the article, the town of Hugo Colorado were advised by officials not to drink the tap water or even shower due to the fact that THC somehow made its way into the water supply. However, for anyone who has actually tried to make psychoactive cannabis tea, would tell you that cannabis is fat soluble, meaning that it binds to “lipid molecules”. This is why you make cannabis tea with butter or something of the sorts. Water doesn’t have lipid molecules meaning that THC can’t bind with it, meaning that the official story is highly dubious.

More importantly, only “some of the field tests” tested positive for cannabis while others didn’t. This means that there was never a cross contamination of the water supply. In all odds, the guy handling the testing kit was probably smoking a doobie before the time, having THC on his/her fingertips would definitely contaminate a sample.

According to the article, the water wells were “tampered with”, suggesting that “someone” took THC and dumped it into the water supply. Once again, any cannabis enthusiast would never throw away perfectly good THC.

PRINT IT ANYWAY! – The Truth doesn’t matter!

Now, the fact that the entire story was lacking in any real substance didn’t stop the news outlets from smearing the good name of cannabis with unsubstantiated bullshit. Within a matter of days, every major news outlet had their version of the Reefer Madness.

For those of us that like to exercise “critical thinking”, this article did nothing to sway our views on cannabis. But what about all those people who are barely wiggling out from under Uncle Sam’s Reefer Madness thumb? Certainly the cannabis-ignorant thought it was real…after all, a news outlet reported on it.

These types of articles are designed to sway public opinion, to make people think twice about legalization. It’s a tactic that the prohibitionist camp has been using for many decades now and has been working all this time. Fortunately, in the age of information it’s a bit more difficult to pull the wool over the eyes of the masses, but it certainly did some damage.

Know that Reefer Madness is alive and well, and it’s our job to dispel the lies and shed some light on the truth. The truth is, don’t believe everything you read.
