They Promised Jobs…so Legalize Cannabis!

President Trump Can Legalize Cannabis and Create Millions of New Jobs from CannabisNet on Vimeo.

Every single President of the United States have promised the country “more jobs” however they are ignoring one of the fastest and most lucrative industries in the nation. If they truly wanted to increase jobs they would simply legalize cannabis and hemp nationally, end the federal prohibition on the substance and begin to ‘give the US jobs!”

According to the Marijuana Business Fact Book 2017 there are roughly between 160,000 – 230,000 cannabis related jobs in the US currently. Some of these are full time positions while others are part time, however the pseudo-legal industry has outperformed professions such as bakers, dental hygienists and message therapists.

Can you imagine what the job toll would be if cannabis legal in all the states and where banking was permitted? One could easily see that the cannabis industry could provide much needed jobs to a plethora of jobless people in the US, which currently stands at 7 million as of June of this year. Roughly, 1.7 million of these folks haven’t had a job in more than 27 weeks.

What unemployment means for the country?

When you have a job, you pay taxes. This means that you are actually somewhat contributing to the development of the country. Unfortunately, more than half of your hard-earned cash goes towards funding wars in the Middle East; however, that is an entirely different article.

Nonetheless, those who do have a job of some sorts do their part in maintaining the essential services that we all rely on to live. However, those who do not have a job typically depend on unemployment benefits, social welfare programs and so forth. This actually places a strain on the economy. While not a significant strain, it does not ‘add’ anything to the well-being of everyone.

It’s not like those who live on welfare wants to live on welfare. There is a much greater satisfaction in earning money as opposed to receiving a ‘hand out’, even if it’s from the government. If there were lucrative job opportunities for the seven million unemployed people, the vast majority of them would jump on it without hesitation.

Furthermore, when you reach a level of extreme poverty a few other elements come into play. You have several options when you’re dirt poor.

  1. Become homeless and beg
  2. Turn to crime
  3. Keep on trying to make money whichever way you can

For many, being homeless is an option. However, there is also a significant portion of the population that would be willing to break the law in order to survive. This can range from petty theft; drug trafficking, breaking and entering, mugging and prostitution. Poverty has a way of morphing what we once thought to be immoral to  something that appeals to our basic sense of survival.

Therefore, the more poverty there is in a nation, the higher the crime rates. Of course, this isn’t applicable to all people, but the statistics suggest that the premise is accurate.

How Cannabis Can Create Jobs

As mentioned, the current job toll for the cannabis industry is a little under a quarter million jobs. This despite the fact that it isn’t “legal” on a federal level and that a little less than half of the states in the US do not have any type of cannabis related program in their states.

What would happen if we embraced cannabis to the max? What would happen if we started planting Hemp on a major scale, developing processing centers for hemp and its derivatives and started creating products with the plant?

There would be a job explosion. The cannabis industry can be divided into 3 sectors; Medical, Recreational and Industrial.

The vast majority of the jobs would fall in the “industrial category” seeing that hemp has the ability to produce more than 50,000 unique products. The recreational aspect of the cannabis industry would house the second largest number of jobs, including everything from bud-tending, specialized boutiques, tourism, merchandizing, paraphernalia and so forth.

Finally, the medical sector also provides jobs, however these would be more specialized positions and can range from clinics, personal care givers, specialized cannabis-based medicines and so forth.

The point I’m trying to make is that if we legalize cannabis in its full spectrum, we could easily see more than a million new jobs created over the next five to ten years. This is of course if the US government ever decides to simply give up on their failed policy.

So why aren’t they legalizing?

The answer is simple. It’s not about safety nor is it about “protecting society from the ills of drug use” but rather corporately owned interests in industries that have thrived on the prohibition of cannabis. Prisons, pharmaceutical companies, police unions, other vice industries and many more all rely on the current status of cannabis in order to thrive. You get rid of their cash cow, you essentially render some of the aforementioned sectors useless.

What can we do about it? I guess, we can simply place more pressure on our governmental representatives and keep on doing what we’ve been doing.
