Honey, often called ‘nature’s sweetener’ is a liquid substance that is produced by honey bees and other related insects that have been used for the preparation of food and for the use as medicine for a very long time. It is a thick, sweet liquid that is abundant in wholesome plant compounds and serves as a healthful replacement to refined sugar which contains no beneficial nutrients for the body. Apart from this, honey contains antioxidants that could help minimize blood pressure while improving the cholesterol levels in the body. It also does not increase blood sugar as high as refined sugar which makes it a great option for diabetics.

The 2018 article by Colton O'Brien drew attention to the fact that hemp could serve as a 'rescue' plant for bees due to its flowering period which is usually From around late July and September. The need for a rescue plant arose from the ability of the hemp plants to serve as nutritional sources which they provide in the form of pollen.

Cannabis honey is honey that is infused with marijuana and it is something that is often said to have been created for a very long time as there are claims which say ancient Egyptians used it in their rituals. However, it has become progressively popular as many cannabis chefs are whipping up several cannabis honey recipes to create sensations in the cannabis industry. It is often considered (though yet to be proven) that cannabis honey should have some beneficial properties because the components have individual health benefits. For example, honey contains compounds like carbohydrates, amino acids, proteins, vitamins, and minerals while the cannabinoids contained in cannabis such as THC and CBD are known to be beneficial to the treatment of chronic pains, epilepsy-related seizures, stress, and epilepsy.

Making Cannabis Honey

To create your cannabis honey, there a few things you need to prepare beforehand as they will help you in the preparation of your cannabis honey. These include:

Cannabis: This should be about half an ounce or as desired because the quantity determines the strength of your honey.

Honey: This is also entirely up to you as you put in enough to help you achieve your desired potency, although 2 cups of honey should be sufficient for the half-ounce of weed.

Cheesecloth: to be used in holding the cannabis after decarboxylating and to help the honey in saturating while taking in the cannabinoids.

Parchment paper: This is to prevent the weed from sticking to the baking pan while decarboxylating.

A baking pan to be used for decarboxylating your cannabis.

A durable, airtight, and clean glass jar.

A sturdy crockpot

A piece of string made of fibers to make use of while preparing the product.

After making the above available, you can then start on the preparation of your cannabis honey. It is recommended that the cannabis is first made into a tincture before being infused into your honey. This is because the plant does not have the necessary fats that allow it to bind properly with the honey. Thus the first step is to decarboxylate your cannabis by heating it to ensure that THCA can be transformed into the THC compound which will ensure that you experience some high when using the honey.

To do this, your oven should be preheated to about 240 degrees and your parchment paper placed on the baking pan before adding your cannabis to it. This can then be put into the oven to cook for 40 minutes or more, though the temperature of the oven needs to be kept low to ensure you preserve the terpenes and cannabinoids in your cannabis because any higher and it might vaporize them. The weed should be regularly stirred and the sheet rotated to ensure it is evenly cooked and decarboxylated enough to be added to the honey.

After successfully decarboxylating your weed, it is then placed into a cheesecloth and tied with the string.

Next, the cloth is then put into the glass jar and the honey added.

The jar is then placed into the crockpot with a cloth between them

The pot is then filled with water so that up to 75% of the jar is submerged

This is then placed in the oven to cook for 8 hours with the temperature set to about 200 degrees Fahrenheit.

The jar is shaken a few times in between to ensure there is no pressure build-up.

Once it is done, you can then remove the jar carefully from the crockpot, remove the cheesecloth to strain the weed.

Your cannabis honey is now ready for use and can also be stored for a very long time as long as it is in an airtight container and away from sunlight in an area with a temperature of about 50-70 degrees. Apart from being used on its own, cannabis honey can also be used in the preparation of other baked goods and desserts.
