The Ultimate Guide to Marijuana Seeds

The cannabis seeds are probably the most essential thing you need as a cannabis grower before starting with your grow operation. There are two ways to get your cannabis grow operation started, one is by planting the seeds directly and the other is by planting clones of healthy plants. However, clones are mostly used by those who engage in commercial production of cannabis while seeds are commonly adopted by small scale growers.

Seeds are an important aspect of the plant’s reproduction as it serves as the embryo of the plant before it develops into the fully grown plant after some considerable care. The female cannabis plant which produces the buds users consume is also responsible for the growth of the seeds which can be done only when they are pollinated by the male cannabis plant. Apart from the male and the female cannabis plants, there are also some plants called hermaphrodites which produce both female and male characteristics and can self-pollinate to produce seeds.

Types of Seeds

Cannabis seeds are majorly categorized based on their characteristic and genetics. Genetics of a seed represents its quality and this is why many breeders choose to cross several types of plants with their desired traits together to achieve the ones with the best quality.

Feminized seeds

These are the female-only cannabis seeds that have been specially engineered to produce the female plant without any male plants at all. They are the ones commonly used by small growers for better efficiency and peace of mind as you do not have to worry about the possibility of the male plant pollinating the bud-producing female plant.

Auto-flowering Seeds

These are the cannabis seeds that do not depend on the lighting schedule before flowering but rather do so when the plant reaches a certain age. Normally, for a cannabis plant to start flowering, it takes the rotation of the light schedule into 12 hours of light and 12 hours of darkness before the plant start flowering. However, the auto flower seeds were specially bred to start flowering as soon as they mature for easy maintenance.

High CBD Seeds

These are cannabis seeds that are bred to meet up with the high CBD demand, especially for medicine. CBD (Cannabidiol) is one of the chemical compounds available in cannabis which has been found to have several therapeutic benefits thus proving useful for medicinal uses in the treatment of several illnesses and diseases. Compared to THC (the compound responsible for making someone high) the percentage of CBD available in the plants is not much. This is why some have chosen to breed seeds which have a higher CBD content than normal.

Photoperiod Seeds

These are the regular cannabis seeds that are developed normally, light-dependent for flowering, and not specially bred for some desirable traits. They are mostly suitable for growers who are just starting or want high yields from their seeds as its vegetative period can be extended especially for large plants. These types of seeds are usually a mixture of the male and female seeds meaning that you can use it in the production of more seeds as they pollinate one another.

On the other hand, your cannabis seeds can also be classified and selected based on strains or genetics.

Indicas

These are cannabis strains that are typically grown in regions with cold climates especially mountainous areas which makes them able to cope with low temperatures. They are usually compact making it possible for them to occupy small spaces, somewhat rugged and do not require too much light to grow which is why they are more suited to indoor growth. Indicas can help reduce insomnia or anxiety as it calms the mind and makes you relax.

Sativas

This cannabis strain develops into tall and large plants and is more sensitive to change which is why it is mostly recommended for experienced growers to get them. Unlike Indicas, Sativas produce some contrasting physical and mental effects on the body giving you that stimulating and energetic feel as they contain low levels of CBD but high levels of THC.

Besides, hybrids of the Indica and Sativa seeds have been bred making it easier to have the best of both worlds. There are hybrids that have more Indica strains, those with more Sativa strains, and those that have an equal percentage of both strains.

On a final note, seed selection should be a thing that is primarily based on personal preferences, needs, and existing environmental conditions. Other factors such as lighting, availability, and experience can also come into play as some seeds are sturdier than others and might not require too much maintenance. Remember, your seeds can be stored if not used to prevent it from growing mold or other pathogens. This can be done by refrigeration or simply storing them in dark, cool places before use.
