space buckets to grow weed

For people who are interested in growing their own weed at home without having to spend so much money or use up so much room, space buckets may be the solution. As an added benefit, it also has a low carbon footprint.

Space buckets are an easy DIY solution for growing cannabis at home, enabling you to grow large amounts with a budget solution without requiring lots of room.

Benefits Of Using A Space Bucket

In essence, a space bucket provides all the essential elements of a grow room into a small micro-environment. It would have space for one cannabis plant, lights, power, and fans for ventilation.

The benefits of using a space bucket include:

Affordability

Creating your own space bucket is easy and cheap; you are only limited by your imagination. Whereas making a grow room could cost you thousands of dollars, a space bucket would only cost around around $100 or $200 using many things you likely have lying around at home. If you do have to buy anything else to make it, the materials are sold at a low cost in household supply shops.

Controlled Environment

Space bucket growers enjoy the challenge of growing high yields of marijuana using a small space. Additionally, the fact that space buckets are a closed-off micro-environment already gives you more control with your grow.  Space buckets are different from Dutch Buckets in aeroponic growing.

The environment you grow your weed in here will also provide protection from mice, cockroaches, and pests. It will give you a sterile environment to ensure you get the healthiest yield possible to.

It should also be said that there are some disadvantages when it comes to the control you have with a space bucket. For example, if you have a large grow room but made a mistake with the lighting, this can easily be corrected. But since the room is so much smaller in a space bucket, such mistakes can kill the entire plant, which is why it’s important to pay attention to detail.

Small Space & Discretion

Space buckets can be used to grow marijuana in dorm rooms, small studio apartments, and tiny houses. You can simply place it in your closet or garage, or just about any place that’s dark. When you seal off the space bucket, it should be camouflaged enough to trick other people who live in your home.

Additionally, the lights shouldn’t be seen once sealed but people may hear a low hum coming from the fans.

It should also be said that when it comes to size, it’s entirely up to you how big or small you want the space bucket to be. And since they take up such little space, growers can have multiple space buckets around the home, ensuring you always have marijuana for harvests at different periods in time.

How To Make Your Own Space Bucket

While you can buy your own space buckets, it’s fairly simple to also build them yourself.

What you’ll need:

  • 2 5-gallon plastic buckets

  • 1 bucket lid

  • 2 small fans, such as CPU fans

  • 1 full-spectrum LED grow light or 4 CFL bulbs (180W)

  • Aerosol/spray glue

  • Silicone sealant

  • Timer

  • Measuring tape

  • Power strip

  • 4 6mm bolts

  • Duct tape

  • 210x120 mylar film

  • 11m thin rope

  • Permanent marker

  • Safety glasses

  • Hardware gloves

  • Exacto knife

Instructions:

  • Put the safety equipment on, and start work on the drainage by measuring 8cm from the bottom of the buckets. Use the permanent marker to draw up a horizontal line, then cut the bottom portion of the bucket off using your knife or any other rotary tool.

This ensures that the top section of the bucket has space for lights while the bottom now has space for the drip tray.

  • Drill 12 uniformly-spaced holes on the bottom of the other 5-gallon bucket. If there are handles on it, remove them. Cover the top using the other bucket, as it will then turn into the lid that will connect both buckets.

  • Drill a hole beneath the rim of each quarter for the bottom bucket so that it will connect the top and bottom. Use these holes to insert the bolts, then fasten them in place using the nuts and washers.

  • Use the permanent marker to indicate where the bolts are located, then place the top bucket on the bottom bucket.

  • Measure 4cm across another 4cm, then mark an upside-down L. Use the knife to cut open the wide channel so that you can have a twist lock for the space bucket.

  • Install ventilation using your small fans or CPU fans. Measure the fan housing then draw the appropriate openings by cutting the shape on the bottom bucket. Create the same cutout for the other exhaust fan on the top bucket.

  • Now that the ventilation system is in place, it’s time to add the lights. Choose from either LED grow light strips or 4 CFL bulbs, then line them on the interior of the bucket lid. Cut a fan hole on the lid for air circulation.

  • Use the rope and duct tape to seal the space bucket. Place the sealing between the bolts and the rim of the bottom bucket, but check if the seal can fit properly. Add multiple layers of duct tape once it fits properly so that the gap in each bucket is closed efficiently, ensuring that light from outside the bucket won’t get into the space bucket.

  • Use mylar film to line the interior of the space bucket, but first, spray the inside of each bucket with glue then stick the mylar film. Reopen the fan cutouts using a knife.

Keep in mind that you should have an intake fan that faces inside of the bucket while the exhaust fan faces outside. If you notice any gaps in the cutouts where you placed the CPU fan, simply use the silicone sealant to close it off. When it’s all installed, do a test run by putting the power on the fans and the timer lights.

Overall, using a space bucket isn’t much different from growing marijuana in a closet; the only difference is that it’s located in a controlled environment, much like a terrarium that has been closed off.
