Cannabis for Acne

Can Cannabis Oil Help With Acne Conditions? from CannabisNet on Vimeo.

Almost everyone experiences acne at some point in their lives; for many, it never goes away. Although acne isn’t fatal, it’s still a nuisance especially for adults who still suffer through them regularly.

Acne is a form of skin disease affecting the oil glands in the skin. The pores found on the skin are connected to these oil glands, which produce an oily substance known as sebum. Pores are connected to the oil glands through a follicle, which acts like a canal. In each follicle, oil transports dead skin cells and brings them to the skin’s surface. Thin hairs also grow through the follicle and are seen outside in the skin. Once follicles clog up, this results in the growth of a pimple.

There are many kinds of pimples, although the most common types include whiteheads, blackheads, papules, pustules, nodules, and cysts. Most pimples grow on the face, although they also appear on the back, chest, neck, as well as shoulders. In severe cases, they can leave scars.

Acne is the most common skin condition, and it affects people of all ages and races. Teenagers and young adults suffer from acne the most, as a result of hormonal changes experienced uring puberty. However, some people who are already in their 40s or 50s still get acne.

How Can Cannabis Help?

CANNABIS OIL FOR THE SKIN

It’s well-known that both cannabis and hemp have excellent healing properties for the skin. CBD in particular has shown promise in the treatment of serious skin conditions, including psoriasis and eczema.  In fact, cannabis is also beneficial in slowing down the aging process and helping you look younger. CBD is a great source of antioxidants and has anti-inflammatory properties, making it ideal for the prevention of acne and other skin diseases.

A study conducted in 2010 by a Hungarian scientist, Dr. Tamas Biro, intended to analyze the impact of CBD on the skin. He isolated skin cells and applied CBD, to check how the cannabinoid interacts with our own endocannabinoids. The findings revealed that the endocannabinoid cells play an important role in determining how much oil is produced by the skin. When our body produces too much anandamide, this causes a surge in oil production; while inadequate anandamide will result in dryness and skin diseases such as eczema. When Dr. Biro administered CBD on the skin cells, anandamide was reduced and oil production was halted. This is beneficial for adults suffering from acne because if the body produces too much sebum, the CBD in cannabis is effective in calming it down.

A recent study published in 2014 entailed the administration of CBD on sebaceous glands, which are responsible for secreting oily sebum, causing acne. The researchers stated that CBD worked as a “highly effective” sebostatic agent. During the course of the research, CBD which was administered directly right onto cultured human sebocytes inhibited lipogenic actions in many compounds. Lipogenesis is associated to the manufacture of glucose and sugar, especially in adipose (fat) tissue. The study conclude, “Collectively, our findings suggest that, due to the combined lipostatic, anti-proliferative and anti-inflammatory effects, CBD has potential as a promising therapeutic agent for the treatment of acne vulgaris.”

Hemp As An Alternative

HEMP OIL

Since it’s almost impossible to get your hands on CBD oil for a majority of the population, hemp seed oil is an excellent alternative. Hemp is a great source of antioxidants and also has powerful anti-inflammatory properties, which makes it an ideal topical for skin health. Thanks to its inflammation-busting properties, it helps strengthen the immune system while reducing redness and irritation in the skin. Hemp also contains omega fatty acids and antioxidants that prevent cell damage caused by free radicals while stimulating the growth of healthy new skin cells.

Hemp oil also helps keep the skin hydrated and healthy, reducing the risk for outbreaks, redness, and irritation; all of which are associated with acne. The skin absorbs hemp oil easily, and this product won’t block the pores unlike many other beauty products in the market. Regular use of hemp oil or hemp seed oil can stabilize oil production.

Hemp oil is also rich in vitamins especially A and C, and it contains magnesium, potassium, zinc, iron, phosphorus, and calcium. Taking hemp oil internally can also ensure that there is healthy blood flow, benefiting the skin as well as internal organs.
